Softball Falls in AMCC Championship Game

Erie, PA - The Mount Aloysius softball team defeated Pitt-Bradford 9-3 on Sunday morning to advance to the AMCC Championship game, where the Mounties fell 10-5 to Penn State Altoona.

Against Bradford, Kelsey Ickes was in control throughout as she pitched a complete game and allowed five hits and three unearned runs. With the game tied 2-2, Mount Aloysius struck for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take control. The at-bat was highlighted by a double from Brandie Mott that drove in two runs.

The Mounties added three runs in the sixth to take a 9-2 lead. Alexandria Teeter and Alyssa Wills registered RBI doubles before Danielle Hart capped the inning with an RBI single as the Mount advanced to the championship game.

Mount Aloysius needed to beat Penn State Altoona twice in order to capture the AMCC crown. The Mounties looked in control throughout as they built a 3-0 lead early with three runs in the top of the third as Lindsy Sammarco and Jalisa Westover notched RBI singles. Altoona responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth before Mount Aloysius scored a run apiece in the fifth and sixth innings. Chelsea Engeholm scored in the fifth and hit an RBI single to right center in the sixth to make it a 5-3 ballgame in favor of the Mounties.

Altoona responded once again as the Lions scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. Mount Aloysius had one more chance for the comeback, but the Mounties were retired in order in their final at-bat.

Engeholm went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the championship.

Mount Aloysius finishes the season with a 28-12 record and will bid farewell to two outstanding four-year players in Westover and Sammarco. With Westover and Sammarco in Mountie uniforms, the softball program had an overall record of 103-52 (.655 winning percentage) over the past four seasons as well as an AMCC regular season championship in 2011 and AMCC postseason runner-up finishes in 2011 and this season.
