Cresson, PA - Freshman center back
Summer Schell scored on a free kick from 30 yards out with 10 seconds remaining in double overtime to lift the Mount Aloysius women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Penn State Altoona on Wednesday afternoon in AMCC action.
After
Jordan Gebhart was fouled after pushing the ball past a defender in the middle of the field, Schell stepped up and struck a shot into the far corner of the goal to give the Mounties the win. It was Schell's first goal of the season.
The two teams were deadlocked at 0-0 at halftime. The Mounties had their best chance midway through the first half when
Olivia Woodley hit a shot off the crossbar from distance. In the second half, Mount Aloysius got on the board first when
Karen Boone hit a low shot past the keeper off of a corner kick from
Sam Torrenti in the 63rd minute. The Lions responded 12 minutes later with a goal of their own, and despite late pressure from the Mounties the two sides went into overtime.
Mount Aloysius outshot Altoona 5-1 over the two overtime sessions including Schell's shot on the last play of the game.
The Mounties held a 16-8 advantage in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kick opportunties for the game. Woodley led the team offensively with five shots, and
Leanne Cardoso-Bastos registered three saves in goal to notch the victory.
Mount Aloysius improves to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play. They will return to the field on Saturday at D'Youville for another AMCC matchup.
