Box Score 4 Myrtle Beach, SC - After suffering through an eight-game losing streak in the middle of their spring trip, the Mount Aloysius softball team responded with wins in their final three games as the Mounties concluded the trip with a 5-9 overall record.
The Mounties got their trip off to a good start with wins in two of their three games during their first day of competition. Mount Aloysius lost 4-2 to Penn State Berks in their first game before notching wins over Cazenovia by a 6-1 final and SUNY Canton by a 10-2 final.
Hayley McGowan got the Mounties off to a strong start in the victory against Cazenovia with an RBI triple in the first inning that scored
Taylor Swatsworth. With the game tied 1-1, Mount Aloysius scored two runs in the third inning highlighted by a Swatsworth double to center field that plated
Alexandria Teeter. The Mounties added three runs in the seventh inning again led by Swatsworth, who drove home two more with a double before
Chelsea Engeholm ripped an RBI single to complete the scoring. On the rubber,
Hannah Simpson earned the victory as she allowed just one earned run through four innings before
Morgan Rackish closed the game with three hitless innings.
After falling behind 2-0 to SUNY Canton, the Mounties scored four runs in the second inning with
Kate Little providing the big hit with a double to left field that cleared the bases to make it 4-2 in favor of Mount Aloysius. Up 5-2 in the fourth inning, Little again provided a timely hit with a single up the middle that scored one to make it 6-2, and the Mounties added two more runs in the inning. Mount Aloysius then ended the game in the fifth inning via the mercy rule with two more runs. Rackish threw a complete game allowing only four hits to earn her first victory.
The Mounties then fell victim to some close defeats as Mount Aloysius dropped its next eight games, including close losses to Wilkes (7-4 final), Gwynedd Mercy (6-5 final) and SUNY Poly (2-1 final). The Mounties continued to push through and showed resilience by winning their final three contests.
Led by a pitching gem from Rackish, Mount Aloysius defeated the College of St. Elizabeth 2-1 on Friday. The Mounties were down 1-0 heading into their final at-bat. With one out and a runner on second, Teeter slammed a double over the head of the right fielder that brought in
Kaleigh Roop to tie the game. With with two outs and Teeter on third, Simpson came up and chopped a grounder to the right of the pitcher. Simpson beat the errant throw and Teeter scored to make it 2-1 Mounties. Rackish then shut the door in the bottom of the inning.
In their final day of the trip, the Mounties defeated St. Joseph's College-Long Island 7-0 with strong pitching performances from
Stevi Confer and Rackish. Offensively, Teeter went 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBI's and one run scored and
Leanne Cardoso-Bastos went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Swatsworth added a triple and two runs, and McGowan also notched a triple in the seventh inning that scored two. Mount Aloysius then closed out the spring trip with a 11-2 victory over Hunter College.
The Mounties will return to the field on Friday, March 18
th at home with a non-conference doubleheader against Waynesburg. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
