Mountie Softball Wins Four Straight AMCC Contests

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4
Buffalo, NY - The Mount Aloysius softball team had a strong weekend on the diamond as the Mounties traveled to Buffalo and won four conference games against Medaille and Hilbert. The Mounties defeated Medaille 9-8 in eight innings on Saturday and then won 16-5 in game two before sweeping a two-game set on Sunday against Hilbert by scores of 2-0 and 9-1.

The game one victory against the Mavericks was the most dramatic of the weekend as the two teams went to extra innings tied 8-8. In the top of the eighth, Chelsea Engeholm doubled and came around two batters later on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the inning, Morgan Rackish then closed the game by retiring the side in order.

Leanne Cardoso-Bastos, Karly Klein, Taylor Swatsworth and Kaleigh Roop each had two hits in game one. Swatsworth had a solo home run in the sixth inning, and Hannah Simpson and Cardoso-Bastos each recorded doubles that drove in two runs apiece.

The Mounties started off game two with a red-hot offensive showing as they scored seven runs in the game's first inning. Klein, Kate Little and Alexandria Teeter had RBI singles while Roop, Chelsea Engeholm and Bridgit Yothers registered RBI doubles in the inning. Medaille scored four runs in the bottom of the third, and the game was 7-5 in favor of Mount Aloysius after five innings.

The Mounties got going once again at the plate with nine runs in their final two at-bats of game two. Swatsworth notched RBI doubles in both innings while Roop and Teeter also struck for RBI doubles.

Little went 3-for-5 in game two with three RBI's and Roop had four RBI's to lead the Mounties offensively. Stevi Confer (two innings) and Yothers (five innings) allowed a combined four earned runs on the rubber.

Mount Aloysius returned to the field on Sunday against Hilbert and kept improving in the win column. Rackish threw a game-one gem as she allowed only three hits in a complete-game shutout while striking out six, and the only offense the Mounties would need was provided by a Roop RBI single in the first inning and a Yothers RBI triple in the fourth inning.

In game two, the Mounties scored four runs in the sixth inning to end the game via the mercy rule. Rackish was given the ball again in game two and responded with a six-inning complete game as the freshman allowed just five hits.

Cardoso-Bastos, Little and Engeholm each had two hits in the game two win.

Mount Aloysius improves to 15-14 overall and 6-2 in AMCC play. The Mounties will return to the field on Tuesday with a home doubleheader against conference opponent La Roche that is set to begin at 3 p.m.
