Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius softball team split a doubleheader against visiting La Roche on Tuesday afternoon in conference action. In two wire-to-wire contests, the Mounties won 7-6 in game one before falling 6-5 in game two.
The Mounties trailed 3-0 after one inning in game one before scoring four unanswered runs highlighted by RBI singles from
Kaleigh Roop and
Taylor Swatsworth and a Swatsworth solo home run in the bottom of the third. The Redhawks responded with two runs in the fifth inning and one run in the seventh to take a 6-4 lead heading into the Mounties final at-bat.
Roop and
Kate Little started the Mountie rally with back-to-back singles with one out. With two away, a La Roche error allowed pinch runner
Grace Grata to score to make it 6-5.
Leanne Cardoso-Bastos then came up with runners on second and third and came through as she ripped an RBI single up the middle that scored
Bridgit Yothers and Little to win it for the Mounties in walkoff fashion.
Morgan Rackish earned the victory with a complete-game effort, while Swatsworth led the way offensively in game one with a 3-for-3 showing at the plate.
In game two, Mount Aloysius once again faced a 3-0 deficit after one inning and trailed 5-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Cardoso-Bastos recorded an RBI groundout to score
Kate Little in the inning, but La Roche answered with a run in the top of the seventh to make it 6-3.
Mount Aloysius rallied in their final at-bat once more. Swatworth walked and
Karly Klein and
Chelsea Engeholm hit back-to-back singles. Klein then stole home to cut the deficit to 6-5 with no outs. With Engeholm on second base, the Mounties were then retired 1-2-3 to end the ballgame.
Little and Swatsworth each reached base in all four of their plate appearances in game two. Little had two hits and walked twice, while Swatsworth drew four walks.
The Mounties now stand at fourth place in the conference standings at 7-3 with eight games remaining. Mount Aloysius returns to action on Saturday with a conference doubleheader at Pitt-Bradford set to begin at 1 p.m.
