Buffalo, NY - The Mount Aloysius softball team registered a doubleheader split with host D'Youville on Saturday afternoon. After falling in game one 2-1, the Mounties won game two by a final score of 8-7 to clinch a berth in the upcoming AMCC playoffs.
Game one was a low-scoring affair in which the Mounties jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the top of the third. The visitors loaded the bases and
Kate Little drove in
Kaleigh Roop after a fielder's choice groundball. D'Youville responded with their first run in the bottom of the inning, but neither side could generate much offensively as the Mounties
Morgan Rackish and Spartans Kalie McHenry kept each team off the board.
The deciding run occurred in the bottom of the sixth on a D'Youville home run. Rackish pitched six innings and allowed five hits and two runs while striking out five.
Karly Klein led the team offensively with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate.
In game two, the Mounties generated all the offense they would need with an explosion in the second inning in which Mount Aloysius scored all eight of its runs in the game and sent 13 hitters to the plate. The highlights included back-to-back singles from
Alexandria Teeter and
Taylor Swatsworth that each drove in two runs, and a
Hayley McGowan single later in the inning that also drove in two Mountie runners to make it 8-0.Â
The Spartans cut the deficit to 8-4 in the bottom of the inning and scored another run in the fourth inning to make it 8-5. D'Youville nearly came back with two more runs in their final at-bat, but with a runner on second the Mounties recorded the final out.Â
Swatsworth and Klein each recorded two hits to pace the Mounties at the plate in game two.
The Mountie finish the regular season with a 10-8 conference record. Based on tiebreakers, the Mounties earned the #6 seed in the upcoming conference tournament set to begin on Friday at D'Youville. Mount Aloysius will play their first game in the double-elimination format on Friday at 10 a.m. against #3 seed Penn State Behrend, with the winner moving on to play #2 seed Penn State Altoona.
