Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius women's soccer team was in action on both Friday and Saturday on their home field for two non-conference matches. After losing in a tight 3-2 affair to Hood College on Friday, the Mounties responded with a 3-0 victory over Keystone College on Saturday.
Against Hood on Friday, the Mounties started off very strong and found their first goal at the 12:53 mark when
Jordan Gebhart took in a pass from
Cheyenne Kuncher off of a corner kick and struck for her second goal of the season. The visiting Blazers responded with a goal less than two minutes later, and though the Mounties held a 7-4 shot advantage the two sides went into halftime deadlocked at 1-1.
Mount Aloysius took the lead once again 13 minutes into the second half.
Olivia Woodley knocked in a goal after
Katie Mirance sent in a cross to the far post to make it 2-1 in favor of the Mounties. However, Hood tied it up for the second time with a goal with 65:12 showing on the clock. The two teams traded chances down the stretch, and the Blazers scored with 1:43 remaining to take the victory.
Mount Aloysius outshot Hood 16-10.
Leanne Cardoso-Bastos made three saves in relief in goal, and Woodley and Mirance led the way offensively with four shots apiece.
The Mounties responded on Saturday with a shutout win over the Giants. Mount Aloysius was all over the ball early on and were rewarded just under 18 minutes into the game went Woodley hit a shot in off the post and in off of a through ball from Kuncher. The Mounties had chances throughout the half to add to their lead, but settled for a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
In the second half, the two sides went back-and-forth before
Amanda Brancato made it a 2-0 game with a volley off of a loose ball in the box. Holding a two-goal advantage, the Mounties sealed the win with just over six minutes to play when
Sam Torrenti recorded her fifth goal of the season off of a feed from Woodley in the box.Â
Cardoso-Bastos registered her first shutout of the season in net with three saves in the win.
"I'm proud of the team for responding to a tough loss on Friday with a shutout victory today," Head Coach
Matt Davis said. "We went with four freshmen starting along the backline in
Emily Black,
Summer Schell,
Karen Boone and
Katie Quillman and they were solid and steady along with Leanne in net."
The Mounties now stand at 3-2 overall and return to the field on Tuesday with a home game against Lycoming at 4 p.m.Â
