Bradford, PA - The Mount Aloysius women's soccer team earned a crucial victory on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 win over host Pitt-Bradford in AMCC action.
Mount Aloysius started slow offensively in the first half, but Mountie backline was able to keep the Panthers off the board despite nine shots from the home side. The highlight defensively was a penalty kick save from keeper
Leanne Cardoso-Bastos with less than a minute to play in the opening half.
The Mounties got things going in the attack in the second half through the midfield play of
Jordan Gebhart,
Sam Torrenti and
Brianna Byler as well as striker
Cheyenne Kuncher. Gebhart recorded four shots including three shots on goal in the final 45 minutes of action. With 15:28 remaining in the contest Byler beat a defender and whipped in a cross to Gebhart, who headed the ball into the back corner of the net for the 1-0 lead. Despite pressure from Bradford in the game's final minutes, the Mounties held strong for the victory.
Cardoso-Bastos made eight saves while recording her eighth shutout of the season.
The Mounties improve to 11-5-1 overall and 6-2 in conference play. They return to the field on Tuesday with an away match at La Roche. A win will give the Mounties the #2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
