Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius women's soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 4-1 AMCC Semifinal playoff lost to visiting Franciscan University on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mounties struck for a goal early in the contest when
Skylar Taylor one-timed a shot off of a
Sam Torrenti corner kick into the back corner of the goal. Mount Aloysius held the 1-0 advantage for the next 28 minutes despite opportunities for both sides, including a
Katie Quillman shot off of a pass from
Summer Schell that sailed just high over the crossbar for the Mounties. With 12 minutes remaining in the opening half, Franciscan equalized after a through ball past the Mountie defense led to a one-on-one break that was finished into the back of the net. Less than a minute later, the Barons scored again with a shot in the box to take a 2-1 lead that they held heading into halftime.
In the opening 20 minutes of the second half, the Mounties pressed and had four corner kick opportunities and three shots against the Baron backline. However, the home side wasn't able to convert and Franciscan scored two goals in a three-minute span with less than 20 minutes to play.
"Franciscan was clinical with their finishing and that was the difference. We didn't respond well as a team to their first goal and allowed a second one as a result," Head Coach
Matt Davis said. "I thought we had a really good chance at equalizing in the opening portion of the second half, but we didn't take our chances."
The Mounties held a 20-9 advantage in shots and 7-5 advantage in corner kick opportunities for the game.
Goalkeeper
Leanne Cardoso-Bastos finished with three saves to conclude a fantastic season in net for the Mounties, while
Jordan Gebhart helped lead the Mountie attack with five shots.
"This team was as tough of a team physically as I've coached. We gutted out a number of great victories this season through sheer effort and will, and that's why it was such a great group. A big thanks to our lone senior
Tamara George, and we'll look to build off this season with a bright future," Davis said.
The Mounties tied the program record set last season with 12 victories while making their second straight appearance in the AMCC Semifinals.
