Lady Mounties Bowl at Virginia Union Invitational

Cresson, Pa. — The Lady Mounties competed 11/3 through 11/5 at the Virginia Union University Invitational in Richmond.

Day 1 consisted of five 5 game baker matches.  It was a slow start for the team and they went 2/3 losing matches to Virginia State (758/784), Virginia Union (802/804) and St. Peter's (807/989). The 2 wins were against New Jersey City (869/704) and Bowie State (858/653). High baker average for the Mounties went to anchor Rayissa Amon with a 17.9 followed by Lucy Craig 16.8 and freshman Maria Claycomb with a 16.6.  The Mounties were in 3rd place out of 10 teams at the end of the day.

Saturday's competition was in the traditional format and the team gained momentum defeating Elizabeth City State 828/579, Coppin 901/799, Chowan 800/651 and then 2nd place St. Peter's 890/835. The only loss was a nail biter against Duquesne which went down to the final frames with the Mounties missing out 884/900.  High average and high game were both at the able hand of anchor Amon who averaged 204 for the 5 games with a high game of 225. Amon was also selected for the All Tournament Team.  Day 2 ended with the Mounties in 3rd place.

Day 3 brought back the baker matches in a 3 match best 4 of 7 baker game format. The Mounties started their day defeating 4th place Virginia Union 157/147, 177/102, 220/146 and 172/168. Match 2 was against second seed St. Peter's and the Lady Mounties earned their spot in the finale by winning 203/183, 197/185, 163/165, 188/163 and 174/146. The finale was another nail biter against Duquesne where the teams squared off in a 7 game shootout. The Mounties lost in the final 5 frames of the day for a second place finish. 138/216, 149/198, 168/206, 216/190, 185/136, 159/158, 187/220. Beth Longer led the Mounties on day 3 with a 18.8 baker frame average, followed by Amon with a 18.7 and Michelle Bello with a 17.9.

This is the highest finish for Mounties Bowling in a non conference meet to date. I saw many players step up this weekend including our freshmen.  The Lady Mounties compete in Altoona on Saturday and Sunday in the first AMCC Round Robin event.
