Myrtle Beach, SC - The Mount Aloysius softball team concluded its week-long spring trip with a 5-5 overall record highlighted by two victories in which the Mounties registered 18 runs and 13 runs offensively.
Mount Aloysius opened its season with a doubleheader against King's College on Sunday. The Mounties were defeated 12-3 in game one before capturing game two with a 4-1 win. King's scored 11 runs in their first two at-bats in game one to seize control.
Kate Little had two hits and
Karly Klein scored two runs in the loss, while
Emily Wawroski threw four innings in relief on the rubber while allowing just two hits.
In game two,
Morgan Rackish was dominant as she threw a complete game and let up just five hits and one unearned run. Mount Aloysius scored two runs in the second as
Kateryna Bittner and
Leanne Cardoso-Bastos each recorded RBI singles. The Mounties doubled their lead in the fourth inning courtesy of a
Courtney Link RBI triple and
Alexandria Teeter RBI single. Cardoso-Bastos went 4-for-4 in game two and Teeter added two hits.
On day two, the Mounties registered impressive shutout victories with a 4-0 win over Clarks Summit before a 18-0 victory against John Jay. Wawroski was credited with the win in the victory over Clarks Summit as she threw a complete game and allowed only three hits. Bittner struck for a single in the sixth inning that drove in two and broke the scoreless tie. Mount Aloysius then scored early and often in the win over John Jay, with highlights including a three-run home run from
Hannah Simpson in the first inning, a
Karly Klein RBI triple in the second inning and
Harley Nelen RBI triple in the third inning. Wawroski also cleared the bases with a double in the fourth inning that expanded the advantage to 17-0. Rackish (three innings) and
Nina Shatzer (two innings) combined for the shutout.
On day three the Mounties fell by final margins of 4-2 to Robert Morris College and 10-4 to Ohio Valley University before responding with a 13-3 victory over Sweet Briar College on day four in a single game. Mount Aloysius then lost by a margin of 3-0 to Division II Malone University on Thursday.
In their final day of action, the Mounties defeated Gwynedd Mercy 9-1 before losing to Penn State Abington by a final of 6-4. In the victory over the Griffins, Mount Aloysius struck for 16 hits as Link, Wawroski and
Hannah Ruby each had three hits for the game.
Caroline Showalter and Teeter added two hits apiece, and Ruby threw a complete-game performance allowing eight hits while striking out four.
The Mounties will return to action on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Pitt-Johnstown at 3 p.m at home.
