Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Chatham on Monday afternoon as the Mounties dropped game one by a final of 10-2 before earning an 11-2 victory in game two.
Game one was a close contest throughout as the visiting Cougars led 1-0 through three and a half innings before the Mounties scored two in the bottom of the fourth when Karly Klein and
Kendra Donelson recorded RBI doubles. The 2-1 Mountie lead held steady until Chatham's final at-bat in the top of the seventh when the Cougars exploded for nine runs on five hits and three Mountie errors.
Leanne Cardoso-Bastos led the Mounties in game one with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate, and
Nina Shatzer was handed the loss after allowing nine hits and three earned runs in 6 and 1/3 innings of work while striking out four.
Game two was dominated by the Mounties as the home side scored three runs in the bottom of the second to begin their scoring.
Kate Little drove in two with a single, and
Hannah Simpson recorded an RBI single to increase the advantage to 3-0. An inning later, Mount Aloysius notched seven runs highlighted by RBI singles from Simpson,
Emily Wawroski,
Hannah Ruby and Klein. The Cougars scored two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Mounties responded with a run in the bottom of the inning on a
Courtney Link RBI triple and ended the game via the mercy rule after five innings.
Klein went 3-for-3 with two runs scored in game two, while Wawroski,
Kateryna Bittner and Simpson added two hits apiece.
The Mounties move to 12-10 overall and will return to the field Wednesday with a conference doubleheader at home against Penn State Altoona starting at 3 p.m.
