Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius softball team clinched a playoff berth in the upcoming AMCC Tournament as the Mounties swept visiting Pitt-Bradford by scores of 6-0 and 10-3 on Sunday afternoon in the regular season finale for both teams.
The Mounties needed to sweep the Panthers in order to secure a postseason berth, and they did so spearheaded by a pitching staff that allowed just seven hits in the two-game sweep.
In game one,
Morgan Rackish threw a complete-game shutout while allowing only three hits.
Hannah Ruby and
Courtney Link provided RBI singles in the first and second innings to give the Mounties an early 2-0 lead. Mount Aloysius added four runs in the fourth highlighted by RBI hits from Link,
Caroline Showalter and
Kate Little to increase the advantage to 6-0.
Link and Ruby each went 3-for-4 in game one to lead the Mounties offensively.
The visiting Panthers took a 3-1 lead after three innings in game two before the Mounties rallied.
Hannah Simpson drove in
Karly Klein on a groundout in the fourth inning to cut the gap to 3-2, then the home side exploded for seven runs in the fifth. Ruby got things going with an RBI double that scored
Kendra Donelson, and
Emily Wawroski notched an RBI single to score Ruby to give the Mounties a 4-3 lead. Three batters later,
Leanne Cardoso-Bastos came through with a triple that scored two and Link followed two batters after that with a triple that drove in two more to make it a 9-3 ballgame. The Mounties completed their scoring courtesy of a sacrifice fly from
Alexandria Teeter that brought home Link and a
Kateryna Bittner bunt that scored Klein.
Wawroski, who pitched 4 and 1/3 innings of no-hit pitching in relief, then secured the game two win for the Mounties.
Ruby added three more hits in game two to finish with six for the day, and Cardoso-Bastos went 3-for-3.
With the victories, the Mounties move on and will open up the AMCC Tournament against #3 seed Penn State Altoona on Friday at Penn State Behrend.Â
