North Myrtle Beach, SC - The Mount Aloysius softball team completed its week in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Thursday, with one win and one loss. The Mounties defeated Penn State Fayette 8-2 before falling to Wilkes University by a final score of 6-4.Â
The Mounties took on Penn State Fayette in the first game, and sent
Stevi Confer to the circle to start the game. After giving up a run in the first inning on a walk, single and fielders choice, Confer would settle down, allowing four hits and one unearned run in her next five innings. Confer finished the game throwing six innings, allowing five hits and one unearned run.
Offensively, the Mounties had a balanced attack as seven different batters recorded hits, with no one recording more than one. While she did not get a hit, leadoff hitter Courtney Link reached base three times via walks, and proved to be a terror on the base paths, scoring two runs and stealing two bases. The rest of Link's teammates followed suit, as four other Mounties combined for five more steals.Â
The game remained tied at 2-2 through three innings until
Emily Wawroski drove in the eventual winning run on a sacrifice fly to center field, and
Caroline Showalter gave the Mounties some breathing room with a two-run single following the sac fly.
Leanne Cardoso-Bastos,
Kate Little and
Kayla Hopkins would all tally RBI singles in the 5th, pushing the Mountie's lead to 8-2.
The Mounties would then face Wilkes University in the second game of the day. They would jump into the lead early, as Link led off the game with a triple down the left field line, and then was driven in by another Hopkins RBI single.
Abby Reitz would then drive Hopkins in a few batters later to give the Mounties a 2-0 lead. Mount Aloysius would add to their lead in the next two innings as
Kate Little singled home
Kara Pisczek in the 2nd and
Riley Keefer drew a bases loaded walk in the 3rd.
After the third inning the Mounties offense went quiet, as the Wilkes offense woke up. Wilkes rallied with two outs to score three runs off of starter
Emily Wawroski in the 4th inning, forcing the Mounties to bring in
Morgan Rackish to get out of the jam. Rackish would remain in the game, as Wilkes was able to tie the game up in the fourth and win it with two runs in the 6th, giving Rackish her first loss of the season.
The 6-4 loss to Wilkes brings the Mounties record to 7-5. The Mounties will return to Cresson over the weekend, and are scheduled to be back in action next Saturday, March 17th to face Grove City College in their home opening double header, starting at 1:00 PM.
