Cresson, PA - After a long lay off due to weather cancellations, the Mount Aloysius softball team swept Franciscan University in their home opening doubleheader Wednesday. In both games the Mounties were shut out for 6 innings but were able to comeback and walk off with wins in the bottom of the seventh.
Game 1 saw Franciscan jump out to an early lead, scoring an unearned run on 1 hit and an error off senior pitcher
Morgan Rackish. They would add to the lead in the 3rd on a two run blast to center field.
Hannah Ruby entered the game for the Mounties in the 4th inning and would pitch the final four frames allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks. After 6 and a half innings the Mounties trailed 5-0 only able to muster 4 hits in their first 6 at bats.
After the lead off batter reached on an error, the Mounties would quickly threaten in the 7th with the first three batters reaching to load the bases. The first Mountie runs came on errors in the outfield as
Karly Klein and
Courtney Link drove would be sacrifice flies which were dropped, allowing three runs to score.
Kate Little followed this up with a one out double to left field to tie the game at 5. After a pop up to second,
Kayla Hopkins came through with a clutch two out hit down the line that would plate the winning run for the Mounties.
The game winner was Hopkins third of the day, giving her nearly half of the Mounties 7 hits. Ruby was credited with the win for her final four innings of pitching.
The second game of the day was a fast moving pitchers duel as both teams combined for 9 hits in the game.
Nina Shatzer took the circle for Mount Aloysius, scattering 4 hits over her 6 innings of work, with the lone Franciscan run coming in on a 6th inning home run to left.
Kara Pisczek pitched the last frame only allowing a walk but keeping the score at 1-0.
Emily Wawroski pinch hit to start the 7th and drove a ball into the left center gap for a double. After a walk
Courtney Link dropped down a bunt but a split second look to third base gave the speedy lead off hitter enough time to leg out the single and load the bases. Little provided some more late inning heroics as she drove a ball towards the right center gap. The Franciscan right fielder hauled in the line drive but the tying run was cross on the sacrifice fly. The Mounties loaded the bases again on a walk. After Hopkins was unable to drive in the run with one out, first baseman
Lydia DeFazio looped a soft liner over second base plating the winning run.
Pisczek collected her first Mountie win after keeping Franciscan at bay in the 7th.
The Mounties move to 9-5 on the season and are scheduled to continue AMCC action over the weekend as they travel to play Pitt-Bradford on Saturday and continue on to Buffalo to face D'Youville College on Sunday.
