Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius softball team swept a doubleheader against LaRoche College on Thursday afternoon. They erased an early six-run deficit in game 1 to win 11-6 and won game 2 by the mercy rule final score of 10-1.
Kara Pisczek started game 1 and saw the LaRoche bats get off to a hot start, which included five hits including a long two-run home run that gave the visitors a 4-0 lead after the first frame. The lead grew two innings later when La Roche pushed two more runs across on an RBI walk and sacrifice fly.
The game changed in the bottom of the third.
Leanne Cardoso-Bastos drew a leadoff walk, and later scored on an
Emily Wawroski single to center. The Mounties fully canceled out the two runs scored in the top of the inning when
Kate Little scored on an error with two outs.
Hannah Ruby entered the game to pitch in the fourth and dominated the remaining four innings. She allowed three hits over four innings while not walking or hitting any batters. Ruby's strong effort in the circle gave Mount Aloysius the opportunity to come back.
The Mountie offense came up huge in the fourth inning, scoring eight runs in the frame. They knocked out seven hits in the inning including a run of 6 batters reaching base in a row, 5 of them singling their way aboard.
Courtney Link, Little, Wawroski, Ruby and
Karly Klein all drove in runs in the inning. Little tacked one more on in the 5th as she drove a double into left field to score Link. Overall the Mounties knocked out 11 hits in the game, with Link, Little, Wawroski and
Brianna Benscoter all recording multiple hit games.
Ruby would stay in the circle to start game two. She was dominant again, allowing one run over five innings pitched while scattering six hits and walking none. After LaRoche took the lead in the top of the third, the Mounties struck right back with three runs of their own. Wawroski again drove in the first Mountie runs as she drove in two with another clutch single to center. Left fielder
Kayla Hopkins followed this with an RBI single of her own. Little doubled in two more in the 4th, to extend the Mountie lead to 4.Â
The Mount Aloysius bats got hot again in the bottom of the sixth, knocking out four hits to score five runs to push the lead to 9 runs. Klein hit a leadoff double to left, and was quickly driven in by catcher
Caroline Showalter. After an error and a passed ball, Link would squeeze home another run. The final blow came on a one-out double from
Kayla Hopkins. The double scored two pushing the Mounties to the mercy run rule to finish the game.
On the day Link and Little finished with four hits a piece. with Wawroski and Little driving in five runs each. Defensively the Mounties played well committing only two errors over the two games while their opponent recorded 7. Ruby picked up both wins on the day, moving her record to 5-2.
The Mounties now sit at 12-10 with a conference record of 5-5. The will play six games over the next four days, traveling to Hilbert on Saturday, hosting Medaille on Sunday and visiting Pitt Greensburg on Monday. They will finish up regular season play with a double header on Wednesday the 2nd against D'Youville, which will be played at Pitt-Bradford.
