Softball Comeback Falls Short

Box Score Buffalo, NY- The Mount Aloysius softball team lost to Hilbert on Saturday after a furious comeback came up two runs short, with a final score of 17-15.

Hilbert dominated the early part of the game against as starting pitcher Morgan Rackish. She struggled through harsh weather conditions as she allowed 11 runs (4 earned) over 2 and two thirds innings pitched. Her replacement, Stevi Confer atruggled as well, allowing 6 runs (5 earned) over one and a third. Through 4 the Mounties trailed 17-0 and were on the verge of losing the game after 5 innings due to the deficit. 

After a leadoff Kate Little single, Emily Wawroski hit a home run to left field to start the Mountie rally. 8 of the next 9 batters reached bas eas the Mounties slowly cut into the lead. The inning was capped off when Hannah Ruby hit a 2 out Grand Slam over the center field fence to cut the Hilbert lead to 5 runs. Kara Pisczek kept the Hilbert bats quiet for the final two innings as Mount Aloysius continued their comeback attempt. They scratched one more run across in the 6th on a Wawroski single and two more in the seventh on a Ruby double and a pinch hit single from Caroline Showalter. The Mounties were able to get the tying and go ahead runs on base, but were unable to drive them across in the 7th.

Ruby and Wawroski were the offensive stars for the Mounties as together they drove in 9 of the 15 runs. Ruby finished 4/5 with 3 runs scored and 5 batted in. Wawroski went 3/5, scoring 2 and driving in 4. Kate Little also chipped in three hits and 2 RBIs. 

The Mounties record now sits at 12-11, and 5-6 in conference. Game 2 of the doubleheader was canceled due to field conditions after the first game. A make-up date has not yet been decided. They will return to Cresson to play Medaille College tomorrow, in a game that was originally scheduled to be at Medaille. The Mounties will be the visiting team in both games.
