Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius softball team split a doubleheader in cold, blustery conditions on Sunday against Medaille College. The games, which were rescheduled from early April, saw the Mounties as the visiting team on their home field. The Mounties won the first game 1-0 and lost the second game 9-3.
Game 1 was a great pitching duel that saw seven hits and one run between the two teams.
Courtney Link led off the game with a bunt single, but then was thrown out attempting to steal second. It was the last hit the Mounties would see for five innings. The lone run of the game came in the top of the 6th. After Link stroked a single into left field, her second of the day,
Kate Little drove a line drive into the gap in right center. The speedy Link was able to scamper around the bases on the hit and give the Mounties a one-run lead.
Hannah Ruby did her best to keep the Mounties in the game. She tossed her second complete game shut out of the season, scattering four hits and a walk in the game. She struck out three to pick up her 6th win of the season. Medaille attempted a two out rally in the last of the 7th, however after a walk and a single, Ruby was able to get the final out to pop up to first base to end the game.
Mount Aloysius went with the hot hand in game two, starting Ruby again. She wasn't as sharp in the second game, allowing six runs in 3 and 2/3 innings.
Nina Shatzer pitched the remaining two and a third, allowing three unearned runs.
The Mounties were held to three runs on six hits in the second game. The first Mountie run came in the third after Link hit a two-out double down the left field line. Little came up big again, driving in her second RBI of the day with a single through the right side. The other two Mountie runs scored in the 4th. Ruby led off the inning with a single. Then with one out
Lydia DeFazio hit a deep drive to left field. The fly ball cleared the left field fence, to tie the game at 3. The home run was DeFazio's first in a Mountie uniform.
With the split the Mounties record moved to 13-12 with a 6-7 conference record. They will get back on the road right away this week as they will first travel to Pitt Greensburg. They will follow this up with another trip to Buffalo, where they will play three games postponed due to weather. The first is the second game of Saturdays scheduled doubleheader against Hilbert College and that will be followed the next day with a doubleheader against D'Youville.
