Mountie Softball Dominates Doubleheader

Greensburg, PA = The Mount Aloysius softball team swept their doubleheader at Pitt-Greensburg in dominating fashion. Both games were ended by the run rule after five innings of play. The Mounties won the first game 10-0 and the second game 20-10.

Hannah Ruby pitched game one for the Mounties and picked up her seventh win of the year. Ruby tossed her fourth complete game and third shutout of the season, allowing only three Bobcat hits. The Mountie offense was kick started in the first inning when outfielder Kayla Hopkins drove her second home run of the year into deep left field. Throughout the game they would collect 16 hits, with each batter collecting at least one. Hopkins finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored and four more driven in. Courtney Link collected two more hits and three runs scored in the game. Ruby, Lydia DeFazio, Karly Klein and Riley Keefer all chipped in with multiple hit games as well.

Game two was not as easy for the Mounties as they fell behind early. Nina Shatzer started for Mount Aloysius and only lasted two innings. Shatzer allowed eight runs scored, however only one of them was earned as the Mountie defense committed three errors behind her. Shatzer was replaced by Kara Pisczek who pitched the final three innings allowing two runs, one earned, to get the win.

After a 1-2-3 first inning and giving up four runs in the bottom half, the Mount Aloysius offense finished the game in a big way. The Mounties scored eight runs in the second inning, four in the third inning, two in the fourth inning and six in the fifth inning to get over the 8-run rule to end the game early. In the second inning, the first seven Mounties to bat all reached base as they tallied three doubles, three singles and a walk. Ruby continued the rally after the first out was recording hitting a long home run to center field to score the final three runs of the inning.

Overall the Mounties pounded out 22 hits in the five innings played, six of them going for extra bases. The offense shared the load as five Mounties recorded three hit games and three more had two hits each. The 20 runs scored is the teams highest output over the last five seasons. While all Mounties chipped in, Hopkins had the strongest statline for the day finishing the double header 6-for-7 with five runs scored and seven runs batted in. 

The sweep puts the Mounties at 15-12 overall with a conference record of 8-7. They will travel to Buffalo on Wednesday to play the final three games of their regular season. Wednesday night. They will play the second game of a doubleheader against Hilbert College that was postponed due to weather and field conditions on Saturday. On Thursday, they will play a doubleheader against D'Youville to complete regular season play.
