Mountie Softball Wins Under the Lights

Box Score
Buffalo, NY - The Mount Aloysius softball team defeated conference opponent Hilbert College 8-3 on Wednesday evening. The game was the second game of a doubleheader that was canceled over the weekend due to rain and field conditions.

The Mountie offense got off to a hot start, scoring a run in each of the first three frames. Freshman Kayla Hopkins started the scoring in the first with a clutch two-out single to center field to score leadoff hitter Courtney Link. Another freshman, Brianna Benscoter, added to the lead in the second with another two-out RBI single. Hopkins drove in another in the third on an RBI groundout.

After the Mounties gave two back in the bottom of the third, they were able to restore the lead in the following at bat. Benscoter reached on an error, and then the top of the lineup came through with three consecutive hits from Link, Kate Little and Hannah Ruby. The final three Mountie runs came in the last inning. Lydia DeFazio drove in the first run and Karly Klein drove in two more a few batters later. Benscoter finished with three hits leading the way offensively for the Mounties. Together they amassed 14 hits, with Link, Ruby, Hopkins and DeFazio all collecting two hits.

Ruby took the circle again for Mount Aloysius and put in another strong effort. Ruby allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits and two walks. She collected her 8th win of the season and her 5th complete game.

The Mounties now sit at 16-12 overall and 9-7 in conference and have secured a birth in the conference playoffs. They are scheduled to complete their regular season on Thursday with a doubleheader against D'Youville College.
