Mounties Lose Overtime Heart-breaker at Penn State Behrend

Erie, PA -- The Mount Aloysius Women's Soccer team traveled to Erie on Wednesday afternoon, to take on Penn State Behrend in the AMCC Tournament Semi-finals. They suffered a heart-breaking defeat, 3-2, in overtime.

In their seventh overtime game of the season, the Mounties saw their championship hopes dashed, just over one minute into the extra period. The Lions' shot sailed into the top corner of the goal.

The game itself, was played very even for the entire 90 minutes of regulation. The shot total was 8-5 in favor of Penn State Behrend, while each team had equal numbers of corner kicks and fouls. The score was also tied 2-2.

Penn State Behrend got the scoring started when they scored on a chip shot, in the 20th minute. Brenna McGuire was the goal scorer for Penn State Behrend, as she registered her 16th of the season, to put the Lions up, 1-0.

The Mounties would strike back when Kourtney Walls (Salix, PA, Forest Hills) would head in a corner kick from Brianna Byler (Landisville, PA, Hempfield), to knot the score at 1. The goal was Walls' team high eighth of the season.

With just over a minute and a half remaining in the first period, Penn State Behrend would pull ahead 2-1 heading into the break. They scored on a cross to the top of the 18, where Emily Scaletta scored her first goal of the season.

In the 58th minute, Jenna Gardner (Montoursville, PA, Loyalsock) crossed a pass to Johnna Adams (Lancaster, PA, Hempfield), who deposited it into the back of the net, for her seventh goal of the campaign. The only goal of the second half made the score 2-2. Between the two teams, they only put three shots on goal in the final 31 minutes of regulation.

Once in overtime, the long anticipated stalemate ended shortly. Bella Sestito in between a couple Mountie defenders, then took a shot while she was inside the box. Sestito's shot caught the top left corner of the goal, over the outstretched hand of goalkeeper, Lauren Davey (Leonardtown, MD, St. Mary's Ryken). The quick trigger ended the game and the Mounties' season.

Penn State Behrend moves on to face AMCC #1 seed, Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday for the AMCC Championship. With the loss, Mount Aloysius falls to 12-4-4 on the season. They will look to make it back to the AMCC Title game in 2020.
