North Myrtle Beach, SC - The Mount Aloysius softball team rolled over their opponents on the second day of their Spring Break trip. The Mounties beat Salem State 12-2 and Lancaster Bible 9-0, both in 5 innings.
The Mounties started their offense quickly, putting up two big innings to get ahead of Salem State. In the second inning, they totaled 6 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks. After an RBI groundout to score the first run,
Brianna Benscoter (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) hit a single up the middle to tack on two more.
Courtney Link (Ebensburg, Pa/Bishop Carroll) tripled to left field and then scored on a
Samantha Smith (Trafford, Pa/Penn Trafford) single. The final run of the rally scored on a
Lydia DeFazio (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) double to center.
After a 1-2-3 shutdown inning from
Karlie Clark (Yukon, PA/Yough) the Mounties quickly tacked on 5 more. Smith brought in two with another RBI single, and
Tawnya Holben (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) knocked in one more. The inning ended on a wild play that saw two runs score on an error and the Mountie runner
Abby Reitz (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle Antrim) was thrown out advancing to third. Holben also knocked in the final run in the 6th with another RBI single.
Clark went the distance in the circle for the Mounties, allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits and a walk while striking out 6. Smith was the offensive star of the game, finishing 4 for 4 with 3 runs and 3 RBIs. Holben and Benscoter also collected multi-hit games and knocked in a pair of runs each.
The Mountie offensive success continued in their second game, scoring at least one run in each at bat in the game. They scored 3 quick runs in the first. The first three Mounties each singled to score the first run, with DeFazio collecting the third hit. Holben also singled in a run in the frame and Reitz knocked in the final run on a fielders choice. They scored two more in the 2nd as pitcher
Kara Pisczek (Johnstown, PA/Conemaugh Valley) tripled home a run and then was knocked in by another DeFazio single. Mount Aloysius posted another 3 run inning in the third frame. Reitz hit a 1 out triple and then scored on a passed ball. A batter later
Taylor Cashner (Danville, PA/Danville) recorded her first collegiate hit with a triple to center field. Pisczek followed that with an inside the park home run to score 2.
Pisczek was the star of the game both in the batters box and in the pitching circle. Offensively she was a double short of the cycle, scored three runs and knocking in three runs. She allowed only 1 hit and 1 walk in the five innings played, while striking out 5 in a shutout effort.
The wins move the Mounties to 3-1 on the season. They will have a long afternoon tomorrow, as they will play three consecutive games, starting at 1:30.
