Grove City, PA - The Mount Aloysius Softball team traveled to Grove City, PA on Monday, where they split a doubleheader with the hosts, Grove City. The Mounties took the first game 6-0, and lost the night cap 7-3.
The Mounties jumped out to an early lead in game 1, scoring 4 runs in the first inning.
Courtney Link (Ebensburg, PA/Bishop Carroll) hit a 1 out triple to start the rally, and scored on an error a batter later.
Kayla Hopkins (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan) drove in the second run with a double to right.
Karlie Clark (Yukon, PA/Yough) punctuated the inning with her first career home run, a 2 run blast to left. The Mounties were able to tack on runs later in the game via RBI hits from Hopkins. In the 2nd, Hopkins singled to right to drive in Link, and in the 5th, she singled up the middle to drive in
Tawnya Holben (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel)Â who had drawn a lead off walk. Hopkins finished the game 3-4 with 1 run and 3 runs batted in.Â
Heading to the circle with a 4-0 lead,
Emily Cochran (Natrona Heights, PA/Highlands) dominated Grove City. Cochran hurled a 4 hit, 0 walk shut out for her 4th victory of the year. All four hits allowed were singles, and all came in separate innings. The performance was Cochran's 2nd shutout and 3rd complete game of the season. She currently is 4-0 with a 1.14 ERA.
Mount Aloysius did not enjoy the same success in the night cap. Their offense sputtered early as they were shut out through the first 6 innings of play. Clark started the game for the Mounties and allowed 5 runs on 6 hits in 3 innings of work.
Kara Pisczek threw the final 3 frames, allowing 2 unearned runs on 3 hits and a walk.
The Mounties continued their recent trend of scoring late, as they attempted a 7th inning rally. Holben singled with one out to start the inning and scored on an error 3 batters later. With 2 runners on,
Abby Reitz (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle Antrim) singled to right field to bring in the runs, however the rally would end just after with a game ending ground out.
Clark was saddled with the loss, moving her record to 3-2 on the season. She was the Mounties best offensive performer in the game, as she collected 3 hits.
The split sets the Mountie record at 13-4. They will begin AMCC play on Wednesday, as they travel to Steubenville, OH to take on Franciscan University to open their conference schedule.
