Cardiac Kids: Mounties Win in Final At Bat Twice Against Medaille

Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius softball team picked up two thrilling victories over AMCC foe Medaille on Saturday. They won the first game 3-2, and the second 6-5.

The first game was a tight pitchers duel that saw the Mavericks jump ahead early, but the Mounties come back late. Emily Cochran (Natrona Heights, PA/Highlands) started for the Mounties in the circle. She got off to a tough start as she allowed a 2 run home run in the first inning to fall behind. She was efficient from that point on, shutting down Medaille for the final 6 innings. she allowed only 3 singles in the following 5 innings, and was able to work out of a jam in the 7th to give the Mounties a chance to win the game.

The Mounties were able to scratch the first run back in the 5th. Samantha Smith (Trafford, PA/Penn Trafford) reached on an error and was driven in two batters later when Lydia DeFazio drove a two out double to center. The two out hit was huge for the Mounties, but DeFazio still had more in store. In their final at bat, Kayla Hopkins (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillen) reached with a one out single to center. DeFazio finished the game a batter later as she drove a pitch deep to left to win the game for the Mounties. The blast was DeFazio's 6th of the season and 5th of the week.

Cochran picked up the win as she allowed the 2 runs on 7 hits while not walking any batters. Her record is now 5-0 this season. Offensively, DeFazio followed up her 8-8 performance at Franciscan with another 3-3 game. She was a triple short of the cycle and drove in all three Mountie runs.

The Mounties got off to a much better start in game 2, again courtesy of DeFazio's hot bat. In the first inning she hit yet another home run this time to deep centerfield. Two innings later, she came through in the clutch again, singling to center with 2 outs to bring in two more Mountie runners.

Karlie Clark (Yukon, PA/Yough) was the starting pitcher for the Mounties. She started off well as she kept the Mavericks scoreless through the first 3 innings. In the 4th, she ran into trouble as an error mixed with 4 consecutive singles allowed Medaille to tie the game at 4. Kara Pisczek (Johnstown,PA/Conemaugh Township) relieved Clark and pitched the final three innings. She allowed one run in the 7th, but stranded runners on the corners to put the Mounties down 1 in their final at bat yet again.

Smith was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and advanced to third base on a Kate Little (Asheville, PA/Penn Cambria) single up the middle. Hopkins drove in the game tying run with a single to right. The Mountie rally slowed as the next two batters lined to short and flied to center, but Clark came through at the plate as she hit a single to center to score the winning run.

DeFazio was the lone multi hit performer for the Mounties as she finished 2-4. Clark got a no decision allowing 2 earned runs over 4 innings pitched, while Pisczek picked up her 5th win of the season. She allowed 1 run on 4 hits in three innings pitched to move her record to 5-0.

The Mounties are now 17-4 and 4-0 in AMCC play. They will continue their conference slate as they head to Pittsburgh to take on La Roche University on Tuesday, with Game 1 starting at 3:00 PM.
