Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius softball team picked up a conference sweep as they won both games against Pitt-Greensburg on Tuesday. They won game 1 in extra innings 3-2 and eased to a 7-1 victory in the second game.
The first game started slowly as both teams received strong pitching performances.
Emily Cochran (Natrona Heights, PA/Highlands) started the game for the Mounties and held the Bobcats in check throughout most of the game. She allowed one run in the second on a single and a double to start the inning, and kept Pitt-Greensburg off the board until the international tiebreak runner scored in the 8th on an error.
The Mounties were able to push a run across in the 4th to tie the game.
Kayla Hopkins (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan) drew a one out walk, and moved to second on an error. Cochran then helped her own cause as she singled up the middle to drive in Hopkins.
After allowing the run in the 8th, the Mounties came right back in the bottom of the inning to win the game. After
Kate Little (Asheville, PA/Penn Cambria) dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the tiebreak runner to third, Hopkins lined a single to left field to tie the game. The Mounties continued to roll from there as they would not record another out in the game.
Lydia DeFazio (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) singled to short and Cochran loaded the bases, dropping a single into left field. With the bases loaded and one out, freshman
Tawnya Holben (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) came through with a pinch hit single to center to bring in the game winning run.Â
Cochran picked up her 7th win of the season in the game. She pitched all 8 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 8 hits and 3 walks. She also had a big game at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with 3 singles. DeFazio was the only other Mountie to record a multi-hit game, as she finished 2 for 4.
Game 2 was a much easier affair for the Mounties as they jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.
Samantha Smith (Trafford, PA/Penn Trafford) led off the game for the Mounties with a walk and Little followed that up with a single to right. Cochran then came through again, this time driving a 2 out double to center field to put the Mounties up 2. They were able to add to their lead in the 4th when they tacked on 3 runs on 3 hits. DeFazio doubled to center to start the rally and moved to third base on another Cochran single. After a stolen base, Holben drove another double to center to bring in both runners. Holben moved to third on a ground out and then scored when
Abby Reitz drove a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Mounties continued to build their lead in their final two at bats of the day. Cochran brought in her 3rd run of the game with an RBI infield single in the 5th, and pinch hitter
Taylor Cashner (Danville, PA/Danville) brought in the final Mountie run in the 7th as she drew a bases loaded walk.Â
As the Mounties built their lead,
Karlie Clark (Yukon, PA/Yough) dominated the Bobcats as she allowed 4 hits through the first 6 innings of play. She did allow a run on three hits in the 7th, but walked away with her 7th victory of the season. Cochran finished the game 3 for 3 with 3 runs batted in.Â
The wins move the Mounties record to 24-7 and 10-2 in AMCC play. They will travel to Buffalo over the weekend to take on D'Youville College on Saturday.Â
