Pisczek Tosses 8 Inning Shutout as Mounties Outlast Pitt Bradford

Erie, PA - The Mount Aloysius Softball team started their postseason play with a 1-0 win over Pitt-Bradford in an 8 inning pitchers dual.

The Mounties used a complete game 5 hit performance from Kara Pisczek (Johnstown, PA/Conemaugh Township). In addition to the 5 hits Pisczek only allowed 1 runner to reach on a walk. Through the first 7 innings of play she only allowed 1 runner to reach base per inning. In the final frame, Pisczek got into a bit of trouble with two outs. She walked a batter, allowed an infield single and saw a runner reach on an error to load the bases. She was able to get out of trouble as she got Pitt-Bradford to hit a fly ball to right.

The Mounties were only able to muster 6 hits of their own, but did draw 4 walks to get runners in scoring position. They left the bases loaded in the first, and stranded 2 runners in the 6th. The break through finally came for the Mounties in the extra frame. Kayla Hopkins (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) drover her second double of the day to left center. After Lydia DeFazio (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) was given her second intentional pass of the day, Emily Cochran hit a hard ground ball to short stop. The grounder squeezed underneath the Panther shortstop's glove and into left field which allowed Hopkins to round third and score the winning run.

Hopkins finished 2 for 4 with a double off the wall in the first and the gap shot in the 8th. Courtney Link (Ebensburg, PA/Bishop Carroll) also picked up 2 hits on the day. The win moves Pisczek's record to 7-1 on the day.

The Mounties picked up their 30th win of the season, moving to 30-8 on the year. They will take on the 4th seed Franciscan University, who upset the host Penn State Behrend, in the winner's bracket game on Saturday.
