Panthers Drop Mounties Twice in AMCC Opener

CRESSON, Pa. -- The AMCC portion of the Mount Aloysius Softball schedule began on Saturday afternoon, as the Mounties hosted the Pitt-Bradford Panthers, in a doubleheader. The Mounties (2-2, 0-2 AMCC) dropped both contests to the Panthers (4-0, 2-0 AMCC).

Game 1
- Mount Aloysius fell behind in the first frame, when two Panther singles drove in a run, making it 1-0, UPB.
- Kayla Hopkins (Canonsburg, PA, Canon McMillan) led off for the Mounties in the second inning, after a scoreless first. She singled to right field and was moved to third with a sacrifice bunt, with two outs. Alexa Nagy (Apollo, PA, Kiski Area) roped a pitch past the third base bag, for a single, driving in Hopkins to tie the game at 1.
- After scoreless innings on both sides, in the third and fourth innings, Pitt-Bradford had their 3-4-5 hitters due up. They led off with a single, before the cleanup hitter sent a pitch over the left field fence for a homerun, making it 3-1.
- UPB would add another marker in the sixth inning, as a leadoff single would come around to score, pushing the Panther lead to three runs.
- The Mounties cut into the defecit in the bottom of the sixth. Lydia DeFazio (Harrison City, PA, Penn Trafford) led off the inning with a double to left field. With two outs and DeFazio standing at third base, Abby Reitz (Greencastle, PA, Greencastle Antrim) ripped a ball down the left field line, that cleared the fence for a two-run homer, making it 4-3.
- Kayla Diehl (Schellsburg, PA, Chestnut Ridge) tripled in the Mountie half of the seventh inning, as they threatened, down one. However, the final two batters were unable to push Diehl across, leaving her stranded at third base to end the game. 4-3 UPB

Game 2
- Pitt-Bradford started the second game with two hits right off the bat, producing the first run of the game, in the first inning. They added a second run when a Mountie error allowed a groundball to get through the infield, making it a 2-0 Panther lead.
- The Panthers struck a third time, in the top of the third, when a leadoff single came around to score. 3-0 Panthers.
- DeFazio got the Mounties into the hit column, with a single to left field, with two outs in the fourth inning. Pitt-Bradford's starter had not allowed a baserunner to that point.
- Mount Aloysius was held hitless again, until DeFazio came to bat in the bottom of the sixth. She was able to pick up her second hit of the day and produce the only Mountie run of the game, as she sent a ball over the centerfield section of the fence, for her first homerun of the season.
- Lexi Wilt (Shanksville, PA, Shanksville-Stonycreek) would pick up the only other Mountie hit, in the seventh inning, but would not get past first base. The setback resulted in a 3-1 final score.

Highlights
- In Game 1, all seven Mountie base hits, came from a different person, as nobody had more than one.
- Game 2 saw a high-octane matchup, as Preseason Player of the Year, DeFazio, got three head-to-head opportunities against Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Jordan Uhing. While Uhing got the victory and only allowed one run with 11 strikeouts, DeFazio won the individual matchup, going 2-for-3, with a homerun.

Up Next
- The Mounties were scheduled to play tomorrow at Carnegie Mellon, but that game has been postponed. They are currently scheduled to play, on Thursday, against Carnegie Mellon, at home. There is no make-up date yet in place for tomorrow's games. Mount Aloysius is not scheduled to play another AMCC-opponent, until April 10, when they host Hilbert.
