Sweep Attempt Falls Short as Mounties Split with Bobcats

CRESSON, Pa. -- On Tuesday, the Mount Aloysius Softball team played host to Pitt-Greensburg, in an AMCC doubleheader. It was the second meeting of the season for the two teams, which saw the Mounties sweep, back on March 20. Both teams would win a game, rallying in the late innings for the victory.

GAME 1
- Both starting pitchers started strong, as there were only four total hits, through the first three innings. The Bobcats struck first, in the top of the fourth, when three Mountie errors helped across two runs, giving them a 2-0 lead.
- In the top of the sixth, Pitt-Greensburg would add an insurance run. They loaded the bases with no outs, but Mount Aloysius starter, Madison Hillard (Greenville, PA, Greenville), limited the damage as she allowed one run on a fielder's choice, then got a strikeout and lineout to end the inning.
- Mount Aloysius waited until their last out to wake up the bats. Kayla Diehl (Schellsburg, PA, Chestnut Ridge) singled up the middle to get on base. Abby Reitz (Greencastle, PA, Greencastle Antrim) drove Diehl in for the first marker. Reitz then came around to score from second, as the Bobcats threw the ball away at third base on a steal attempt, allowing the second run. With the bases empty, still two outs, Lydia DeFazio (Harrison City, PA, Penn Trafford) doubled to right center, and was followed by Alexa Nagy (Apollo, PA, Kiski Area) who singled to center, scoring DeFazio, to tie the game at three.
- In the eighth, starting with a runner at second base, the Mounties enduced a one out, ground ball, that they turned into a double play, throwing the Bobcat runner out at the plate. The Mounties scored the winning run in the bottom half of the inning, as Hopkins, who began the inning as the runner at second base, scored on a throwing error by UPG. The win was their second consecutive, extra-inning victory.

GAME 2
- The second game started in reverse order, as the Mounties scored first, in the bottom of the first inning. Reitz tripled with one out and was followed up by DeFazio, who ripped a single past the third basemen, down the line, scoring Reitz to make it 1-0.
- In the bottom of the second, the Mounties again threatened, with two runners in scoring position, and no outs. A double-play cut down a runner and a following ground ball ended the threat.
- DeFazio and Reitz picked up back-to-back hits again in the third inning, putting them both in scoring position, with one out. Nagy picked up the RBI on a ground ball to second base, giving the Mounties a 2-0 lead.
- UPG cut the lead in half in the fifth inning, when a dropped fly ball allowed a run to score, with two outs. The next batter flew out to end the inning, leaving two Bobcat runners on base.
- Diehl led off the bottom half of the fifth inning, with a double to left center. She would score when the following batter struck out, but the ball got away. The batter was thrown out at first base, but Diehl attempted to advance on the throw. The throw to third base got away, allowing her to score from third, putting the Mounties ahead 3-1.
- Pitt-Greensburg clawed back in the next half-inning, putting two runners on with one out. A ground ball to second base allowed the runner from third to score, but the Mounties did not get an out, courtesy of a fielding error. 3-2 Mount Aloysius
- Mount Aloysius added two runs in the bottom of the sixth, extending their lead with two outs. Mattie Harr (Latrobe, PA, Greater Latrobe) singled to right center, driving in Makayla Weyant (Bedford, PA, Chestnut Ridge) from first base. Tawnya Holben (Pittsburgh, PA, Fox Chapel) then added a single, scoring Grace Gardini (York, PA, York Catholic), who pinch ran for Harr, from second base, making the score 5-2.
- In the top of the seventh, the flood gates opened for the Bobcats, as they picked up six hits in the inning to propel them to five runs. They took the lead 7-5, heading to the final at-bat.
- The Mounties went 1-2-3, in the bottom half of the seventh inning, ending the game as a loss.

Highlights
- Game One starter, Hillard, offered up a stellar performance for Mount Aloysius, going 8.0 innings, allowing only one earned run, for her third victory of the season. She registered five strikeouts in the game.
- DeFazio picked up four hits in eight at-bats, on the day, raising her season average to .353. She was the only Mountie to have two hits in both ends of the doubleheader.
- Harr picked up her second career hit, in Game Two of the doubleheader, as well as her first career RBI.

Up Next
Mount Aloysius is scheduled to travel to Alfred State, on Saturday, to take on the Pioneers. It will be the first-ever meeting for the two programs, as last years' matchup was cancelled, due to the COVID-19 pandemic ending the season. Alfred State became full AMCC members, at the beginning of the 2019-20 school year.
