Mounties Start 2-0 on Spring Break

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH -- The Mount Aloysius Softball team got their 2022 season underway, on Sunday, with an offensive explosion that saw them score 29 runs in just 11 innings of play. They beat both Lancaster Bible and Saint Joseph's (Brooklyn), to open their trip.

Leaders
- Ella Pearson (Tyrone, Pa., Tyrone) led the Mounties, going 5-for-8, with three triples and seven RBIs. She also scored four runs on the day and added a stolen base.
- Kayla Diehl (Schellsburg, PA, Chestnut Ridge) went an impressive, 5-for-7, scoring four runs and having three extra-base hits. She also drove in four runs.
- In the circle, Lexi Wilt (Shanksville, PA, Shanksville-Stonycreek) had the best showing on Day One, going 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six. She also picked up the victory.

How It Happened
Game One (vs. Lancaster Bible)
- Mount Aloysius started the day scoring two runs in the first inning. Alaney Vereshack (Smokerun, Pa., Glendale) doubled in Pearson to score the first run, then Alexa Nagy (Apollo, PA, Kiski Area) drove in Grace Gardini (York, PA, York Catholic) for the second run, to make it 2-0 Mounties.
- Diehl scored the lone Mountie run in the second frame, when Kierra Moist (Altoona, PA, Altoona) reached on an error. 3-0 Mounties.
- Tawnya Holben (Pittsburgh, PA, Fox Chapel) drove in the fourth Mountie run, in the third inning, when Nagy scored on a single to right field, making it 4-0.
- In the fourth inning, the flood gates opened. Mount Aloysius tallied seven hits, including a Pearson triple and a double by Lilley Vereshack (Smokerun, Pa., Glendale), all in the half-inning. After the dust settled, the Mounties had scored 12 runs, extending their lead to 16-0.
- After a scoreless top of the fifth inning, LBC strung together a few hits in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs. However, due to the mercy rule, Mount Aloysius won the five-inning game, 16-3.

Game Two (vs. Saint Joseph's-Brooklyn)
- As the home team, Mount Aloysius took the field first in the second game. The Bears jumped on the Mounties early, scoing three runs on five hits in the first inning. The Mounties went three up, three down, in the bottom half.
- In the second inning, Mount Aloysius chipped away, scoring one run on back-to-back doubles by Bella Piacesi (Woodbridge, Va., Charles Cogan) and Holben. 3-1 Bears.
- St. Joseph's added a run in the top of the fourth inning, on an inside the park homerun, making in 4-1. The Mounties then exploded for seven hits and six runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 7-4 lead. The frame was highlighted by three consecutive extra base hits, a double by Diehl, a 2-RBI triple by Pearson, and an RBI double by Whitney Cole (McDonald, Pa., South Fayette).
- Each team added a run in the fifth inning, making it 8-5. Then, after a scoreless top of the sixth, the Mounties scored five runs on four hits, including Diehl's 2-RBI triple. The five runs made the score 13-5, ending the game in walk-off fashion due to the mercy rule.

- In each game, Mount Aloysius had at least nine different players tally a hit. Each game also featured four or more Mounties having multi-hit performances.
