Mounties Split Doubleheader with Barons

CRESSON, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius Softball team hosted Franciscan, on Friday afternoon, in a non-conference doubleheader. The Mounties took the first game, before falling in the second.

Leaders
- Ella Pearson (Tyrone, Pa., Tyrone) went 3-for-7 on the day, scoring three runs. All three hits came in Game One.
- Tawnya Holben (Pittsburgh, PA, Fox Chapel) also provided some offense, in the first game, going 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
- In the circle, Emily Cochran (Natrona Heights, PA, Highlands) had the best day, throwing 3.0 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six batters.

How It Happened
Game One
- Mount Aloysius scored first, getting two unearned runs in the first inning. Pearson singled to start the inning and Alaney Vereshack (Smokerun, Pa., Glendale) walked, and both ended up coming around to score to make it 2-0.
- In the second inning, the Mounties exploded on offense. With two runners on, Pearson doubled to left field scoring Makayla Weyant (Bedford, PA, Chestnut Ridge), who had reached on a single. Then, with two outs and the bases loaded, Holben singled, which drove in two runs. A passed ball allowed a fourth runner to score before Bella Piacesi (Woodbridge, Va., Charles Cogan) drove in Holben to make it 7-0 Mount Aloysius.
- Franciscan got one run back in the top of the third inning, with an infield single and the bases loaded. 7-1 Mount Aloysius.
- While holding the Mounties scoreless, the Barons scored one run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth, cutting the lead to 7-4.
- Mount Aloysius added one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Alexa Nagy (Apollo, PA, Kiski Area) singled to right field, driving in Pearson with two outs to make it 8-4. They held off the Barons, winning Game One, 8-4.

Game Two
- Franciscan jumped ahead early in Game Two, as they saw the first two batters get hits and had runners on second and third. The next two batters pushed them across, giving the Barons a 2-0 lead.
- The Mounties picked up their first hit of the game in the third, on a bunt single by , but were unable to score.
- Mount Aloysius did not get on the board, until the bottom of the sixth inning. Diehl walked and Whitney Cole (McDonald, Pa., South Fayette) came to the plate with two outs. Cole tripled over the right fielder and drove in Diehl to cut the lead in half, 2-1.
- Alaney Vereshack would add the final Mountie hit in the seventh inning, but would not come around to score, ending the game at 2-1.

Into the Box Scores
- In the first game, each team collected nine total hits, but the Mounties turned them into eight runs while the Barons only scored four times.
- In each game, Mount Aloysius recorded more strikeouts, in the circle, than Franciscan. They had 10 Ks in Game One, compared to only five for the Barons. In Game Two, they struck out seven batters, including the six by Cochran, and Franciscan only struck out three Mountie hitters.

Up Next
- Mount Aloysius was scheduled to play, over the weekend, but that matchup with Waynesburg has been canceled.
- They are now schedule to play Monday and Tuesday, against Grove City and Chatham, respectively. Although weather conditions may impact those games, as well.
