Mounties Sweep Redhawks to Start Important Week in AMCC Play

CRESSON, Pa. -- On Tuesday, the Mount Aloysius Softball team hosted La Roche in an AMCC doubleheader. They beat the Redhawks in both games to earn the sweep and improve ot 6-4 in AMCC play.

Leaders
Tawnya Holben (Pittsburgh, PA, Fox Chapel) had a career day for the Mounties, as she reached base in all seven plate appearances, with six consecutive hits. She also drove in three runs.
Ella Pearson (Tyrone, Pa., Tyrone) and Lilley Vereshack (Smokerun, Pa., Glendale) each added four hits on the day. Vereshack drove in three runs in Game One, including two on her first career homerun.
- The best pitching performance was from Traci Hauser (Cherry Tree, Pa., Harmony), as she went 5.1 innings out of the bullpen in Game One, earning the victory. She allowed just two hits and one run, while striking out five batters.

How It Happened
Game One
- La Roche jumped ahead early, as they got a leadoff triple, giving them a 1-0 lead.
- The Mounties added two runs in the bottom of the first. Whitney Cole (McDonald, Pa., South Fayette) doubled home the first run, then scored on Holben's first hit of the day, making it 2-1 Mounties.
- In the top of the second, La Roche scored four times on five hits, taking a 5-2 lead.
- Mount Aloysius got one back in the third inning as Vereshack doubled to center field, scoring Cole from second. 5-3 Redhawks.
- After giving up a run in the top of the fourth, the Mounties scored twice in the bottom half, with Cole and Makayla Weyant (Bedford, PA, Chestnut Ridge) picking up RBI groundouts. 6-5 La Roche.
- The Mounties took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, as they picked up five hits and scored four times. Bailee Renninger (Lock Haven, PA, Central Mountain) singled the first run in, tying the game at six. Kayla Diehl (Schellsburg, PA, Chestnut Ridge) followed that up with a triple to left field. She was brought home when Pearson hit a sac fly, giving the Mounties a 9-6 lead.
- Houser would hold the Redhawks scoreless in the final two frames. Vereshack added two insurance runs on her homerun to center field, in the bottom of the sixth, helping to secure the 11-6 victory.

Game Two
- Mount Aloysius jumped ahead in the bottom of the first inning. Cole would drive home Pearson, with an RBI single, giving the Mounties a 1-0 lead.
- The Mounties would add to their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Holben drove in two runs with a single down the right field line, with the bases loaded. Bella Piacesi (Woodbridge, Va., Charles Cogan) drove in the third run of the inning, when she hit a sacrifice fly to right field, making it 4-0 Mounties.
- In the fourth inning, the two teams traded runs. La Roche scored one in the top half of the frame, but the Mounties got it back as Emily Cochran (Natrona Heights, PA, Highlands) singled to drive in Diehl from second base, putting the score at 5-1.
- La Roche added one more marker in the top of the sixth inning, but that would be the last score of the game. Mount Aloysius would hold on for the 5-2 victory.

Into the Box Scores
- Mount Aloysius held a big advantage in hits on the day, as they doubled the La Roche total, 26-13, between the two games.
- In Game One, Mount Aloysius got hits from all but one of their starters, while La Roche's top six batters registered their eight total hits.

Up Next
- Mount Aloysius does not get much chance to rest as they travel to Penn State Altoona, on Wednesday, for a doubleheader with the Lions.
- Penn State Altoona is currently ahead of the Mounties at 9-1 in AMCC play. They are coming off a sweep of La Roche, this past Monday.
