Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Mounties Shut Out by Penn State-Behrend

ERIE, Pa. -- Six singles sophomore Hunter Reed (Shamokin, Pa., Our Lady of Lourdes) picked up the Mounties only set en route to two conference team losses to Behrend at Westwood Racquet Club.

Freshman Lucas Letizia (Dublin, Oh., Worthington Christian) and sophomore Matt Jacobs (Somerset, PA, Somerset) both saw limited play, including a mid-match retirement from the former, due to ongoing lower body injury concerns.

Match of the meet:

Reed's six singles match opened with a strong first set, grabbing the first set 6-4 with consistent baseline play coupled with strong net coverage. Behrend's Ethan Hillhouse countered with a strong injection of pace in the second, attacking Reed's second serve for quick approaches and tracking down Reed's lob efforts. Pushed to a tiebreak, the increased baseline pressure proved insurmountable for Reed, who fell to a 9-3 deficeit. Depsite a late tiebreak push, Reed could not complete the comeback, falling 10-7.

Junior Tanner Beck (Lancaster, PA, Hempfield) saw a competitive match cut short once the second round reached decision, pushed up the lineup by the Mountie's injuries to battle against Behrend's Mitchell May at three singles. May's lefty slice proved brutal from both the deuce and ad courts, pulling Beck out of position from the onset of the point. Grinding baselining and attacking forehands brought Beck within arm's reach of every game, punishing slipped approaches with low cross court passes. Despite the scoreline suggesting a straightforward affair, the point quality proved notable, each player finding a rhythm resulting in a high quality set-and-a-half.

The Mounties close out the conference regular season hosting Penn State-Altoona for an on-campus double header on 4/15, beginning at 1:30pm.
