CRESSON, Pa. -- On Tuesday, the Mount Aloysius Softball team returned home to host La Roche in a conference battle. With good weather and a great crowd, the Mounties (10-10, 4-4 AMCC) swept the Redhawks (6-20, 1-7 AMCC) and won their third and fourth straight games.
In Game One, La Roche started out fast, tagging the Mounties for two runs in the very first inning to grab a 2-0 lead. After that,
Jessica Koptcho (Mountain Top, Pa. / Crestwood), who started for the Mounties, settled in and held the Redhawks from scoring again until the sixth inning. Between the Redhawks scoring, the Mountie offense exploded for seven runs. They got three RBIs from
Alysha Cutri (Imperial, Pa. /Â Bishop Canevin), two RBI doubles from
Annalyn Isaacs (Mars, Pa. / Mars), and RBI base-hits from bothÂ
Bella Piacesi (Woodbridge, Va. / Charles Cogan) and
Olivia Zeigler (Kittanning, Pa. / Armstrong), during the stretch and grabbed a 7-2 lead. While La Roche attempted a comeback, they could only manage three more runs, as the Mounties earned the 7-5 victory.
Game Two looked very similar to the line in Game One. La Roche once again scored twice in the first inning, before going scoreless until the sixth. In between their runs, Mount Aloysius plated seven markers, including five in the fifth inning alone.Â
Maggie Cypher (Kittanning, Pa. / Armstrong) drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly, in the third inning, whileÂ
Isabella Marquez (Greensburg, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic) tied the game with an RBI single in the fourth inning.
The fifth inning started with another RBI by Cypher, who reached on a fielder's choice. Piacesi then doubled with the bases loaded, driving home two of the three baserunners and giving the Mounties a 5-2 lead. Isaacs and Piacesi would both score on passed balls, growing the lead to 7-2. After La Roche scored twice in the sixth inning,Â
Sarah Henninger (DuBois, Pa. / DuBois) drove in an insurance run for the Mounties. The Redhawks followed with a 1-2-3 inning to end the game, giving the Mounties a doubleheader sweep.
Piacesi led the Mounties offensively, going 3-for-6 on the day and driving in three runs. She also scored twice.
Mount Aloysius is set to host Hilbert, on Saturday, at Central Cambria High School. The game was due to the forecasted weather. The Hawks are 10-8 following two losses to Houghton on Monday, but swept Carlow in AMCC action over the weekend. They are 5-3 in AMCC play.
