Mountie Softball Salvages Split Behind Walters' Shutout

CRESSON, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius Softball team hosted their final home conference games of the season, on Monday, as they played Pitt-Bradford. Despite falling in Game One, the Mounties won Game Two behind great starting pitching and consistent offense.

Mount Aloysius (14-12, 8-6 AMCC) grabbed a lead in the first inning of Game One. They loaded the bases and Alysha Cutri (Imperial, Pa. / Bishop Canevin) produced an infield single to push across the first run of the game, with two outs. They would leave the bases loaded, but head to the second inning with a 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately, the Panthers would answer with one run in the second inning before adding three runs to their score in the third inning, going ahead 4-1. They added six runs in the fifth inning, extending their lead to 10-1, leaving the Mounties just one inning to stay alive. Mount Aloysius would make some noise in the fifth, as their first two batters of the inning reached. Grace Gardini (York, Pa. / York Catholic) followed with a single to load the bases, which was just the second hit of the game for the home team. Whitney Cole (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette) then singled to right center and drove in the Mounties' second run of the game. However, the Mounties would be stopped there, falling 10-2 in Game One.

Game Two was all Mount Aloysius. They scored three runs in the third inning, as Cole delivered an RBI triple and Maggie Cypher (Kittanning, Pa. / Armstrong) also singled to drive in a run, contributing to the 3-0 lead. Sarah Henninger (DuBois, Pa. / DuBois) added two more runs to the total in the fourth inning, courtesy of a two-run double.

While the Mounties failed to score any more runs, it wouldn't matter as Sierra Walters (East Freedom, Pa. / Claysburg-Kimmel) tossed a complete game shutout. She allowed just five total hits and struck out six batters, while stranding eight Panther base runners. It was just the fourth time Pitt-Bradford has been shutout, this season.

Mount Aloysius will now play on the road, to finish the season. They are scheduled to head to Carlow, on Thursday, before traveling to Alfred State for a weekend matchup. The Mounties are currently one win away from officially clinching a spot in the AMCC Tournament.
