Mountie Softball Earns No. 3 Seed in AMCC Tournament; Sweeps Alfred State

ALFRED, N.Y. -- On Saturday, the Mount Aloysius Softball team traveled to Alfred State to take on the Pioneers, attempting to get their doubleheader in amidst possible bad weather. It worked out great for the Mounties (17-13, 11-7 AMCC) as they earned the sweep, scoring 23 total runs.

In Game One, the Mounties were able to cruise to an 8-0 victory, behind strong offense and another dominating pitching performance from Sierra Walters (East Freedom, Pa. / Claysburg-Kimmel). Walters (8-4) earned her eighth victory of the season, striking out six Pioneers and limiting them to just one hit.

Mount Aloysius scored their first run of the game, in the third inning. Whitney Cole (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette) delivered an RBI single, to give the Mounties the 1-0 lead. They added two more runs in the fifth inning, including on an RBI single from Alysha Cutri (Imperial, Pa. / Bishop Canevin), growing their lead to 3-0. Mount Aloysius broke the game open with five more runs in the seventh inning, getting RBIs from Bella Piacesi (Woodbridge, Va. / Charles Cogan), Olivia Zeigler (Kittanning, Pa. / Armstrong), and two from Grace Gardini (York, Pa. / York Catholic), to give them the 8-0 victory.

Game Two saw both teams score a bunch of runs, as there were only three times in the game that the hitting team was held scoreless in their half of the inning. The Mounties had four innings where they put a crooked number on the scoreboard, propelling them to the 15-10 victory.

Each team posted four-run innings in the first frame, then each scored one run over the next two, making it 5-5 after three innings. Mount Aloysius then grabbed a 7-6 lead after the fourth inning, before extending it to 8-6 in the fifth inning.

Both teams scored three times in the sixth inning, then the Mounties followed that up with four runs in the seventh, compared to just one Pioneer tally. Over the seven-inning contest, the Mounties registered 26 total hits, while Alfred State had 16.

Every Mountie starter recorded at least two hits, lead by Cole, Gardini, and Maggie Cypher (Kittanning, Pa. / Armstrong), all of whom picked up four hits in the victory. Cypher went 4-for-4 with four RBIs, ending up a homerun short of the cycle. Cutri added a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs, while Maya Capozzoli (Camp Hill, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) went 2-for-5 with three RBIs.

The sweep placed the Mounties in a tie for third place in the AMCC standings, tying with Penn State Altoona at 11-7. Due to tiebreak criteria, the Mounties will be the third seed in the upcoming AMCC Tournament, while the Lions will be number four. They will play Hilbert in the tournament's opening game, on Thursday.
