Mounties Drop Season Opener

Washington, Pa. – The Mount Aloysius Mounties softball team opened their season on the road against Washington and Jefferson College. What was supposed to be a doubleheader turned into a single game as the second was called off due to darkness. The Mounties were leading 4-0 at the time the game was called. Since the five-inning limit was not met, the game unfortunately does not count.

As for the first game, the Mounties tallied seven hits in the game, batting .230 as a team compared to Washington and Jefferson's .392. This difference in offensive production proved to be the determining factor, as the Mounties lost their season opener 4-8.

Despite the loss, a few Mounties turned in solid performances. Maggie Cypher (Kittanning, Pa., Armstrong) had four plate appearances, recording two hits, one walk, and driving in three of the team's four RBIs. Whitney Cole (McDonald, Pa., South Fayette) also contributed with an RBI double, driving in the Mounties' other run.

The Mountie softball team will have a week of preparation before their next game against Allegheny College. The Mounties will travel on the road for the game on March 12, with the first pitch set to be thrown at 3:30 PM.
