ALTOONA, PA – The Mount Aloysius Men's Golf team continued their spring campaign with a strong showing at the Penn State Altoona Spring Invitational. With both an A and B team competing, the Mounties captured the spotlight by claiming the Team Championship and seeing freshman standout
Josh Nicholl (Ballymena, Northern Ireland, Cullybackey College) earn medalist honors as the Individual Champion.
Teeing off at 1 PM, the Mounties looked to build on their solid spring debut they had just weeks prior. They would go on to do just that. In dramatic fashion, the A team secured their first victory of the spring season by edging out Juniata College in a tiebreaker.
Freshman
Josh Nicholl, recently named AMCC Newcomer of the Year and runner-up at the AMCC Conference Championship, led the way with a career-low round of 3-under-par 69, just one stroke off the program record (4-under) held by Head Coach
Dylan Link. Nicholl's impressive performance not only earned him individual medalist honors at the invitational but also marked his first collegiate victory.
The Mounties saw consistent performances across the lineup.
Viktor Cussil (Sigtuna, Sweden, Arlandagymnasiet) carded a solid 2-over-par 74, finishing in a tie for 8th.
Ethan Batstone (Swindon, England, South Gloucestershire and Stroud) showed resilience, recovering from a double bogey on his opening hole to finish with a 77, playing the final 17 holes at just 3-over.
Jacob Koons (Kingston, Pa., Holy Redeemer) added a 7-over-par round of 79.
Michael Sevier (King George, Va., King George) birdied his last hole of the day posting a score of 80, a key score that helped secure the tiebreaker win against Juniata.
Mount Aloysius' B team also competed, finishing in 10th place overall.
Up next, the Mounties will head to Wooster, Ohio, to compete in the Nye Intercollegiate Tournament, scheduled for Sunday and Monday.
