HAMBURG, NY – The Mount Aloysius Softball Team (14-11, 7-3 AMCC) traveled to New York to take on conference rival Hilbert College (10-13, 5-5 AMCC) in a doubleheader. Coming off a shutout win over La Roche, the Mounties were looking to keep their momentum rolling.
GAME ONE
Mount Aloysius wasted no time getting on the board.
Sarah Henninger (DuBois, Pa., DuBois) led off the game with a single and advanced when
Maggie Cypher (Kittanning, Pa., Armstrong) drew a walk.
Kendra Gardner (Mount Union, Pa. , Mount Union) followed with a single to center field, bringing Henninger home for an early 1-0 lead.
From there, both teams struggled to generate offense until the fifth inning, when the Mounties struck again. Henninger led off the frame with another single, and Cypher followed with a double to left field, scoring Henninger to make it 2-0.
That would be all the scoring needed, as the Mounties locked up the win behind a dominant pitching performance from
Jessica Koptcho (Mountain Top, Pa., Crestwood). She went the distance, tossing a complete game while allowing just three hits, no earned runs, and striking out nine batters over seven innings.
GAME TWO
In the second game, the Mounties aimed for the sweep but quickly found themselves down 2-0 after the first inning. The score held steady throughout the next few frames as both teams struggled to capitalize offensively.
Mount Aloysius finally broke through in the fifth.
Maggie Cypher reached on an error, and later in the inning,
Brenna Watts (Thompsontown, Pa. , East Juniata) delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit in half.
In the sixth, the Mounties tied it up. Henninger singled, and two batters later, Gardner brought her home with another base hit, evening the score at 2-2.
However, Hilbert regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth, putting pressure on the Mounties to respond in their final at-bat.
And respond they did.
In the top of the seventh, Watts singled, Cypher reached on an error, and
Maya Capozzoli (Camp Hill, Pa., Cedar Cliff) doubled to center field, scoring Watts to tie the game. Henninger followed with a single to bring in Cypher, and
Whitney Cole (McDonald, Pa., South Fayette) capped off the rally with a double to right field, plating Capozzoli and giving Mount Aloysius a 5-3 lead.
That score held as the Mounties completed the sweep.
Sierra Walters (East Freedom, Pa., Claysburg-Kimmel) got the start for Mount Aloysius, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing just one run on six hits while striking out five. Koptcho returned in relief, shutting the door in the sixth and seventh innings to earn the win.
