BRADFORD, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius Softball team continued in the AMCC Tournament, on Saturday, trying to avoid a second loss in the double elimination tournament. While the Mounties survived their first game with an extra-inning walk-off win, they were clipped in their second extra-inning game of the day, ending their championship hopes.
In the first game of the day, the Mounties faced Pitt-Bradford in an elimination game, as both teams lost on day one of the tournament. Despite hosting, the Panthers were the visiting team since they were the fifth seed in the tournament and the Mounties were number two. The Panthers scored in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, on a Mountie error. Mount Aloysius tied the game at one with an RBI triple from
Kendra Gardner (Mount Union, Pa. / Mount Union), which scored
Brenna Watts (Thompsontown, Pa. / East Juniata).
The team's each traded runs in the sixth inning, keeping the score tied, this time at 2-2. Pitt-Bradford grabbed a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning, but Mount Aloysius again answered.Â
Sarah Henninger (DuBois, Pa. / DuBois) singled to drive in a run, cutting the score to 4-3. Then, with the bases loaded, Gardner walked to drive in the tying run and send the game into extra innings.
After a 1-2-3 top of the eighth, the Mounties made two outs to start their half.Â
Whitney Cole (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette) andÂ
Morgan Hassen (Northern Cambria, Pa. / Northern Cambria) then each singled, putting a runner in scoring position, still with two outs. Henninger then delivered a double to right center, scoring Cole and giving the Mounties a 5-4 walk-off victory to stay alive and advance in the tournament.
Mount Aloysius would then face Penn State Behrend, in another elimination game, this time waiting until roughly an hour later than expected to start the game. This time, the Mounties got going first, withÂ
Maggie Cypher (Kittanning, Pa. / Armstrong) doubling home a run in the bottom of the first to grab a 1-0 lead.
Penn State Behrend knotted the score in the third inning, but Cypher added another RBI double in the bottom of the third, putting the Mounties ahead 2-1. The Lions scratched across another game-tying run in the sixth inning, which would start a true pitching duel.
With the game tied going into the seventh inning, both teams would make pitching changes. Watts came on for the Mounties, while the Lions brought in Abby Tingley. The appearance was just the sixth for Watts, as she was called upon in a big spot. Each pitcher tossed a scoreless seventh inning, which pushed the game to extras, tied at two.
Both pitchers would put up five more zeros, each getting out of multiple jams without allowing a run to score. The game would get all the way into the 13th inning before Penn State Behrend used a bunt to push across the go-ahead run, taking a 3-2 lead. They would add on, scoring four more runs and leading 7-2 when their at-bat was over. Mount Aloysius would pick up one hit in the bottom of the inning, but it would not be enough as they fell, 7-2.
Cole and Henninger were both named to the All-Tournament team, following the game.
Mount Aloysius finishes the season with a record of 18-16 overall and 10-6 in conference play.
