BRADFORD, Pa. -- On Friday, the Mount Aloysius Softball team opened the 2025 AMCC Tournament with a matchup against Pitt-Greensburg. The Bobcats won their opening game to advance to play the Mounties, while the Mounties earned a bye. Despite the bye, the Mounties fell behind and ultimately fell in their tournament opener.
Pitt-Greensburg broke into the score column first on a solo homerun in the fourth inning. They would go on to add two more runs in the sixth inning, both of which were unearned, giving them a 3-0 lead.
Mount Aloysius struggled to just four hits over the first five frames and went down in order in the sixth, giving them one final at-bat to keep their chances alive. In the seventh inning,
Sophie Smith (Mapleton Depot, Pa. / Mount Union)Â led off with a double. The Mounties used a sacrifice bunt and an RBI ground out byÂ
Maya Capozzoli (Camp Hill, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) to push Smith across, but could not get another runner on base, falling 3-1.
Despite getting the loss in the box score,
Jessica Koptcho (Mountain Top, Pa. /Â Crestwood)Â had another strong start for the Mounties. She hurled a complete game, with eight strikeouts, and allowed just one earned run. However, her season record did drop to 11-4.
Mount Aloysius will move into the elimination side of the AMCC Tournament, needing to avoid a second loss. They will open up Saturday's competition with the first game of the day, facing off against Pitt-Bradford, at 9 am. Tomorrow's winner will face off against the winner of Penn State Behrend and Hilbert, while the loser will see their season end. Mount Aloysius and Pitt-Bradford split their meetings during the regular season, back on April 27.
