Softball Drops Both Contests To Begin 2026 Season

Bridgewater, Va. - On Friday afternoon, Mount Aloysius's softball team opened up their season on the road at the Bridgewater Invitational at Bridgewater College.

The Mounties dropped both games of its Thursday doubleheader in Bridgewater, Va., falling 2-0 to Wilmington College in the opener before an 8-0 setback against Bridgewater College.

Game one was a tightly contested pitchers' duel that came down to a single swing in the opening inning. Wilmington struck for two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run, and that proved to be all the offense either side would generate. Mount Aloysius threatened at times, collecting three hits and drawing three walks, but was unable to push a run across as the Mounties hit into three double-plays.

Hanna Stedman (Washington, Pa., Trinity), Sarah Henninger (DuBois, Pa., DuBois), and Sophie Smith (Mapleton Depot, Pa., Mount Union) each recorded a hit for the Mounties, with Smith also swiping a base. In the circle, Jessica Koptcho (Mountain Top, Pa., Crestwood) battled through four innings, allowing just three hits and two runs, while Patricia Wagner (Gallitzin, Pa., Penn Cambria) was strong in relief, tossing two scoreless frames to keep the game within reach.

The afternoon game saw Bridgewater capitalize early and often, scoring in each of the first two innings before breaking the game open with a three-run fourth and another three-run fifth. The Mounties were limited to two hits in the contest, with Alysha Cutri (Imperial, Pa., Bishop Canevin) and Smith accounting for the offense.

Wagner started game two and allowed two runs over 2.1 innings, while Payton Noll (Portage, Pa, Portage Area) made her collegiate debut and worked the final two frames in relief. Despite the scoreline, Mount Aloysius showed defensive resilience, turning a double play and working through multiple scoring threats.

Mount Aloysius wraps up the day with valuable early-season experience against strong regional competition as the Mounties continue to settle into the 2026 campaign. The Mounties will wrap up the Bridgewater Invitational tomorrow morning, as they'll play both teams again looking to get revenge. First pitch for the games are set for 9:30 and 11:30 at Bridgewater College.
