Myrtle Beach, SC - What a game in Myrtle Beach, as Mount Aloysius outlasted Maine-Presque Isle in a wild 14-13 extra-inning victory on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mounties came out swinging and delivered a massive statement in the opening frame, erupting for 10 runs in the first inning. Sarah Henninger (DuBois, Pa., DuBois)Â set the tone early with a two-RBI triple, then came back later in the inning with another triple to cap the rally. Starting pitcher Patricia Wagner (Gallitzin, Pa., Penn Cambria)Â added a two-run double, while Hanna Stedman (Washington, Pa., Trinity)Â and Sophie Smith (Mapleton Depot, Pa., Mount Union)Â each chipped in RBI hits as the Mounties sent the lineup around in a dominant start.
But Maine-Presque Isle refused to go away, turning the game into a back-and-forth battle. The Owls chipped away with multi-run innings in the second, third, and fifth, eventually erasing the early deficit and tying the game at 12-12 in the seventh inning. With both teams agreeing to start extras with a runner on second, the drama only intensified.
After Maine-Presque Isle took a 13-12 lead in the top of the eighth, the Mounties answered once again. Henninger continued her stellar day at the plate and came through with an RBI single to tie the game, setting the stage for Alysha Cutri (Imperial, Pa., Bishop Canevin). The senior delivered in the clutch, ripping a walk-off double down the left field line to score Menninger and seal the thrilling 14-13 win.
At the plate, the Mounties piled up 19 hits in an all-around offensive showcase. Henninger led the charge with a huge day, going 4-for-5 with five RBIs and two triples. Stedman added three hits and a triple, while Aislinn Myers (Sidman, Pa., Forest Hills)Â was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Cutri finished with two hits and three RBIs, including the game-winner, and Greysyn Gable (Kylertown, Pa., West Branch Area HS)Â chipped in a pair of hits as well.
In the circle, freshman Payton Noll (Portage, Pa, Portage Area)Â earned her first collegiate victory, tossing the final two innings in relief and holding off the Owls just enough to give the Mounties a chance to walk it off.
In a game filled with momentum swings, clutch hitting, and plenty of offense, the Mounties came out on top in one of their most exciting wins of the season so far.
With the win, the Mounties move to 2-7 on the year will look to improve on that record tomorrow. They'll play SUNY Poly at 10 AM and Maine Presque-Isle again at 12 PM. Both games will be played at the NMB Sports Complex in North Myrtle Beach.
