ERIE, Pa. — The Mount Aloysius Mounties were edged in both ends of an AMCC doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Behrend Stadium, dropping a 1-0 decision in Game 1 before falling 6-4 in Game 2.
Game 1: Mount Aloysius 0, Penn State Behrend 1
Mount Aloysius (5-15) battled in a tight pitcher's duel in the opener, holding the home side to just one run on three hits. Jessica Koptcho (Mountain Top, Pa., Crestwood) turned in a strong outing in the circle, going five innings and allowing just one run while keeping the Mounties within striking distance throughout, while Brenna Watts (Thompsontown, Pa., East Juniata) followed with a scoreless inning of relief.
The Mounties' defense remained steady and worked out of multiple jams to keep the game scoreless into the fifth inning. Offensively, Mount Aloysius was limited to two hits from Hanna Stedman (Washington, Pa., Trinity) and Katelyn Ledwich (Johnstown, Pa, Conemaugh Valley) and was unable to find the timely hit needed to break through, as the game's lone run came in the fifth inning.
Game 2: Mount Aloysius 4, Penn State Behrend 6
The Mounties responded with a strong offensive effort in Game 2, recording 11 hits and mounting a late push before falling 6-4. The home team jumped out to an early 6-1 lead through the first two innings, but Mount Aloysius continued to battle back.
Maggie Cypher (Kittanning, Pa., Armstrong) got the Mounties on the board in the second with an RBI single, while Alysha Cutri (Imperial, Pa., Bishop Canevin) added another RBI in the fifth. In the sixth inning, Katelyn Ledwich drove in a run and another Mounties run scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 6-4.
Cutri and Taylor Doyle (Blanchard, Pa., Central Mountain) led the offense with multiple hits in the 11-hit performance, while Isabella Shupp (Danville, Pa, Meadowbrook Christian School) took the loss in the circle and Brenna Watts added a solid inning of relief.
Mount Aloysius will look to bounce back as it continues AMCC play in its next outing.
