Altoona, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's tennis team dropped both ends of an AMCC doubleheader on the road Wednesday afternoon, falling 7-0 and 5-2 to Penn State Altoona at the Adler Tennis Courts on the Lions' Senior Day.
In the opener, Penn State Altoona controlled play from the first set, sweeping all three doubles matches to secure the early point. The Mounties' top duo of Tristen Ruffley (Bedford, Pa., Bedford) and Colin Gable faced a tough challenge against Nick Beard and Gabriel Lopez, while the No. 2 and No. 3 pairings were unable to gain traction as the Lions jumped ahead 3-0.
Singles play followed a similar script, with Altoona winning all six matches in straight sets. Ruffley and Gable each battled at the top of the lineup but ultimately fell in No. 1 and No. 2 singles, as the Lions completed the 7-0 sweep.
The Mounties showed improvement in the second match, earning two points in a more competitive 5-2 decision. After dropping the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches, Mount Aloysius picked up a key victory at No. 3 doubles, where Cole Taylor (Bedford, PA, Bedford HS / St Francis University)Â and Corey Obeldobel (Aliquippa, Pa., Hopewell)Â outlasted their opponents in a tightly contested tiebreak to prevent the sweep.
In singles action, Taylor continued his strong play with a straight-set victory at No. 5 singles, while Obeldobel added another point in a hard-fought three-set match at No. 6, closing it out in a super tiebreak.
Despite the late-match success, the Lions proved too strong at the top of the lineup, taking the remaining singles matches in straight sets to secure the 5-2 win and complete the sweep.
Mount Aloysius now sits at 3-4 overall (3-2 AMCC) and will look to bounce back tomorrow when they travel to Waynesburg University (4-7) for a match at the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility in Waynesburg, PA.
