Mount Aloysius Begins National Championship at El Campeón

Howey-In-The-Hills, FL - The Mount Aloysius College men's golf team battled through a long and challenging opening day at the NCAA Division III Championship on Tuesday at the historic Mission Inn Resort - El Campeón Course, with weather preventing the completion of the first round.

The Mounties will return to the course Wednesday morning to finish Round 1 before immediately beginning their second round of championship play.

Senior William Willis paced Mount Aloysius during Tuesday's action, carding a two-over-par 37 through the opening nine holes to sit tied for 79th overall in the national field. Willis recorded pars on five holes and added a birdie on the par-four fourth hole to lead the Mounties.

Viktor Cussil was close behind at three-over-par through nine holes, posting a 38 that included steady play across the front side. Josh Nicholl also opened with a 37 on the front nine before play was suspended, leaving him at six-over overall due to unfinished scoring.

Luke Sands completed more of his opening round before darkness halted competition, finishing 13 holes at four-over-par. Sands highlighted his round with a birdie on the par-three second hole and remained in position to climb the leaderboard entering Wednesday's resumption.

Ethan Batstone competed through 12 holes before play was stopped for the evening.

The NCAA Championship continues Wednesday morning in Florida as the Mounties look to complete Round 1 and carry momentum into the second round against one of the strongest fields in Division III golf.
