MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Mount Aloysius rifle team opened its 2026-27 season Saturday afternoon against the reigning NCAA champions, West Virginia, and made program history in the process, posting the highest team score in program history with a combined score of 4,587.
The Mounties finished with a 2,270 in smallbore and followed it with a 2,317 in air rifle to finish with 4,587 aggregate points and 279 centers. West Virginia, ranked No. 1 in the match, finished with a 4,737 aggregate score.
Kayla Trinkle (Zionsville, Pa., Southern Lehigh) led the way for the Mounties, finishing ninth overall with an aggregate score of 1,168. Trinkle posted a team-best 583 in smallbore before adding a 585 in air rifle, including 39 centers in the discipline.
James Stevens (Owings Mills, Md., Chapelgate Christian Academy ) also turned in a strong performance for the Mounties, finishing with an aggregate score of 1,150. Stevens recorded a 569 in smallbore and a 581 in air rifle, finishing with 51 combined centers.
Molly Miller (Alum Bank, Pa., Chestnut Ridge) added a score of 1,148, shooting a 563 in smallbore and a 585 in air rifle. Miller's 585 in air rifle was tied for the second-highest score among Mount Aloysius shooters in the discipline.
Abigail Chimera (Clarence Center, N.Y., Clarence) finished with an aggregate of 1,119, while Sydney Castel (Portage, Pa., Portage) recorded a 1,117. Maddy Smith (Bedford, Pa., Bedford) finished with a 1,115 aggregate, and Katherine Wulf (Liberty Township, N.J., Warren County Technical School) rounded out the Mountie lineup with a 1,079.
In smallbore, Trinkle's 583 led the Mounties, followed by Stevens with 569, Miller with 563, Castel with 555, Chimera with 553, Smith with 540 and Wulf with 524.
In air rifle, Trinkle and Miller led the Mounties with matching scores of 585. Stevens followed with a 581, while Smith posted a 575, Chimera a 566, Castel a 562 and Wulf a 555.
The Mounties' record-setting performance provides an impressive start to the 2026-27 campaign as the team begins its pursuit of another successful season. They'll travel to Coach Crum's alma mater next weekend, Morehead State on Saturday and Sunday. Both days will get underway at 8 AM.
