Men's Soccer Wins Conference Opener

Box Score
Hamburg, NY - With some strong defensive play and another goal from sophomore Patrick Chea, the Mount Aloysius men's soccer team defeated Hilbert 1-0 on the road on Saturday afternoon in the conference opener for both teams.

A physical first half saw neither side get on the scoreboard. Hilbert's Matt Hamister ripped a shot off of the crossbar from 18 yards out, and the Mount's Joey Moxey also hit the crossbar on a one-time volley off of a cross from Molia Sesay as the opening half wound down.

The Mount's Jim Smith appeared to knock in the first goal of the game in the opening stages of the second half, but the goal was ruled offsides and the score remained deadlocked at 0-0. In the 66th minute, Chea cut past a defender and ripped a shot from 15 yards out into the upper left corner to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Chea's 10th of the season, as he leads the AMCC in the category.

The Mount held on despite some pressure from Hamister and the Hawks. Nathan Bain, Winston Crozier, John Ouellette and Sesay were fantastic in the back, and goalkeeper James Antonopolos came up with a couple of diving saves to record the shutout.

Antonopolos recorded five saves, while Hilbert keeper Jeremy Kraska was credited with ten saves for the game.

The Mount will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. with a non-conference match against Bethany College before conference play resumes next Saturday with a trip to Pitt-Bradford.
