Box Score Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's basketball team got their season off to a good start with a 72-68 victory over Washington College in their season opener as part of the Coaches v. Cancer Tip-Off Tournament in their home arena.
Tanner Thomas led the Mounties with 21 points and 14 rebounds as he shot 8-for-10 from the field.
Nolan Doyle registered 13 points,
Dillon Bender had 12 points and seven rebounds, and
Arin Wade notched 10 points and four assists to lead the Mounties offensively.
The Mounties outrebounded the vistors by a 49-36 margin and shot 26-for-50 from the field. However, Mount Aloysius committed 18 turnovers which helped Washington get back in the game late.
Mount Aloysius took a 44-33 lead into the halftime break and expanded their lead to 19 in the early going of the second half with a Bender jumper with 17:19 left on the clock. The Shoremen then chipped away and eventually tied the game at 66-66 with 3:28 to go. The Mounties went on a 6-2 run to take the victory with all of their points coming at the foul line down the stretch.
Mount Aloysius advances to the championship game of the tournament tomorrow, where they will face Penn State Altoona at 3 p.m.
