Tanner Thomas, the Mount Aloysius men's basketball team defeated Penn State Altoona 65-62 in the championship game of the Coaches v. Cancer Classic on Sunday hosted by the Mounties.
Thomas scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds a day after scoring 21 points and notching 14 rebounds. He came up with the biggest basket of the game as he converted a layup off of a feed from
Nolan Doyle with 55 seconds to go to give Mount Aloysius a 62-60 advantage. The Mounties then held on to the win with tough defense in the final minute of play.
Arin Wade was also named to the All-Tournament team with Thomas after scoring a game-high 20 points. Also finishing in double figures for the Mount was
Dillon Bender, who contributed 15 points and three assists. Doyle mixed eight points, five assists and three steals.
A back-and-forth first half ended at 27-27. The Mounties expanded the lead to nine with 5:26 to play on a jumper by Bender, but Altoona got back into the game with two three-point shots from Dylan Leazier.
Mount Aloysius improves to 2-0 on the season and are back in action on Thursday with a home game against Bridgewater College at 7 p.m.
