Box Score Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius women's basketball team lost a tight AMCC contest at home by a score of 61-58 on Wednesday evening to defending conference champion La Roche College.
Down by six points in the game's final moments, the Mounties
Haley Bender hit a three-point shot with 2:38 to go to cut the deficit to three, and hit another triple with 1:20 left on the clock to tie things up at 58-58. The two sides traded empty possessions before the visiting Redhawks drew a foul with 13 seconds remaining and hit one of two free throws to take a 59-58. The Mounties committed a turnover and LaRoche increased the lead to 61-58 with less than two seconds remaining on the ensuing fastbreak layup to win the ballgame.
The game was back-and-forth throughout. La Roche led by as much as nine in the opening half, but the Mounties stayed in it and a buzzer-beating three pointer from
Morgan Brosnihan cut the deficit to two entering the halftime break. The Redhawks led the Mounties throughout the second half by a narrow margin until Bender's triple with 1:20 to go.
Bender and Brosnihan each registered 15 points for the Mounties, and Brosnihan,
Abbie Zinobile and
Abby Kulick each grabbed six rebounds. Kulick added three steals, while
Kara Cordell dished four assists off the bench.
Shataya White led the Redhawks with 18 points, and Mackenzie O'Donnell finished with 10 points and 10 boards.
The Mounties return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. AMCC tipoff at Medaille.
